Nintendo registers Super Mario 4 domain

4/14/12 10:40am

Earlier this week, it was reported that Nintendo had registered a domain name for what is perhaps one of the most long awaited sequels in gaming history. What is this domain name?

supermario4.com!

Nintendo could have merely acquired the domain in order to prevent someone else from using it, which is a possibility, as the company has done this in the past. However, it should be noted that the domain has been activated ... even if it's currently being used it to redirect users to Nintendo's country registry page.

Since Nintendo is currently keeping quiet about this registry, all we can do is speculate on what this could possibly bring about.

It could be a code name for the 2D Mario sidescroller that Iwata previously hintend at for the 3DS or a new 3D Mario for the Wii U. Or Nintendo could just be protecting its IP.

But for now, we'll just have to wait and see.

Personally, I hope it's the direct Mario 3 sequel that Stuttering Craig  has always wanted. Even if it would be a tad confusing.

It's funny because, officially, Super Mario World IS Super Mario Bros. 4.

It will never be the sequel that Craig or any other Mario 3 fan wants. The biggest reason why is that Nintendo hasn't made a 2D pixeled side-scrolling Mario title in which Mario is the main character and is not a re-release in over 20 years. Now, there is a growing trend in the videogame community to make games that are a throw-back to classic pixeled games. But I don't know of any major studio or publisher that has created such a game and had major success. If anyone could get away with it though, it would be Nintendo.

Hey, Megaman did it with MM9 and 10, and it was great! Sonic should have done it with Sonic 4, not that it's a bad game, but it surely would have been quite a bit greater if they did it, so why not make a direct sequel to SMB3 in the 8-bit or 16-bit graphics? Hell that would be awesome!
