Nintendo will continue to celebrate The Year of Luigi into Early 2014

12/5/13 8:00pm
Way back on February 14, Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata announced to the world that Mario’s often under-appreciated brother Luigi would finally be given his due, as 2013 was officially proclaimed The Year of Luigi to mark the 30th Anniversary of his first ever appearance. As it turns out, this celebration of The Mushroom Kingdom’s #2 hero won’t end on December 31.

In an interview with Siliconera, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed The Year of Luigi will in fact be a full calendar year, so we can all continue to bask in the Weegie goodness into the first quarter of 2014.

“There are some Year of Luigi activities that will continue into 2014 — including some of the special products that we've launched (the Luigi remote and the Mario and Luigi 3DS XL) — so there will be some Luigi products to carry the Luigi banner into the next calendar year."

Since the celebration kicked-off, we’ve seen the “Green Guy” star in plenty of great games including Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Super Luigi U, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and most recently Super Mario 3D World. On top of being a major character in these titles and having his likeness appear on many pieces of Nintendo merchandise, Luigi was also confirmed for Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS and he even took over Chicago! …Well OK, the Clark/Lake Station L train, but that’s still pretty impressive!

So what will these remaining couple of months bring for Nintendo fans? As Reggie said, we can except to see Nintendo release some more Luigi themed swag but as far as games are concerned we probably shouldn’t expect too much. Maybe some DLC for 3D World or something along those lines but a new game announcement doesn’t seem overly likely but you never know. Miracles are in season in this The Year of Luigi. ;)
