Offline EA game requires Online Pass

1/27/12 4:00pm

38 Studios is probably getting a little antsy about the upcoming launch of their game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. This single-player experience will be taking on games like Skyrim and The Witcher 2, in an attempt to bring high fantasy to everyone. It could be great too, if it wasn’t already locking out content via an online pass. Destructoid has their hands on a review copy of the game and as you can see there is an online pass locking out the House of Valor faction quest.

That faction quest is composed of seven side missions and won’t be accessible without the pass. Also, in an odd move it looks like the N7 armor you would get from playing the Mass Effect 3 demo is also locked behind the pass. Not sure if these means you need both to get the armor or just you have two ways of getting it now. Either way it pretty much sucks to know that EA feels this game isn’t compelling enough to stay out of the used bin without an online pass. Still I look forward to playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on February 7th despite this setback.

It actually is bullshit, considering this has already been cleared up by 38 Studios http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/28/38-studios-head-curt-shilling-elaborat...

This isn't locking out a quest line, its day-one DLC you are getting for free when you buy the game new.

True, I misunderstood like a lot of people, but this is going overboard with the whole anti-used game policy. Though if the whole XBox 720 rumor is true about DRMing the system, then this is a minor offender.

I hate these Online passes, I get them and to be honest I think they are fair, even though I don't like them. Now These Offline passes have me worried. If they are going to start doing this Then I'm just going to stick to getting Capcom Games. They may get alot of flack but they don't do online/offline passes. Capcom>EA.

So getting 50% of a game is fair because of your method of purchase? Also EA > Capcom because EA doesn't lock out ON DISC content to BOTH used and new buyers and sell it as DLC.

From a business standpoint yes, yes its fair. Its annoying and a huge pain in the ass, but yes it is fair. And don't try to make Capcom sound worse than EA. EA sucked last year, what with disapointing games, Online passes that expire, DLC for tetris,Theme Park which you have to pay real money for and Origin checking peoples bank accounts. And you want to pull Capcom up for Jill and Shuma Gorath?!

Wow. The Online Pass system just keeps getting worse and worse.

Is this "House of Valor faction quest" a major part of the game with essential story bits or is it just some fun side quest stuff? I don't mind if it's just side quest stuff. I wasn't going to buy the game anyway, but I WAS gonna Gamefly it. This is another reason why online passes just ruin the game, you can't even RENT the f'n thing to find out if you like it enough to actually purchase it. I do that quite often, or at least I used to.

It's not just EA. Activision, Sony, THQ, and Warner Bros. are pretty big into this as well.
