Ouya to begin shipping to Kickstarter Backers on March 28th, Also they hired an indie darling
The Ouya is shipping out to those who backed the project. Everyone else will be waiting until summer. One of the co-founders of thatgamecompany, Kellee Santiago, has joined the Ouya staff.
The Verge has reported that the Ouya team will begin shipping its Kickstarter-funded, Android-based gaming console, to those who pledged their support with cold hard cash, on March 28th. The scheduled general release of sometime in June is apparently, still on schedule, giving those of us who are a bit more skeptical about the Ouya's success, a little more time to decide if it is worth the $99.99 investment.
But that's not all, Ouya has shipped out more units to various developers to help boost their game library by the time of the consoles general release. Realizing that just sending a console to someone and hoping they make an awesome game for it isn't enough, it seems the Ouya team had the foresight to recruit indie game darling, Kellee Santiago, to serve as a liason between Ouya and developers. This should give Ouya some good attention from indie developers who may have been skeptical about designing a game for the platform before. Another possibility of this partnership is that Santiago could also be used as a helpful resource for developers who want to design for Ouya, as she could help point them in the right direction to make a quality game on the platform as well.
All in all, good news for Ouya and fans of the project. I will personally sit this console out for about a year, as I think that will be the point where we will see if this sinks or swims, but right now, it looks more likely to swim.
