Phone-sex hotline numbers removed from The Last of Us via patch

6/29/13 9:26pm
Earlier this week, Kotaku reported that The Last of Us contained a rather unintentional, albeit hilarious Easter egg. According to Kotaku’s tipster, a set of phone numbers for an exterminator service are pinned to a bulletin board in Pittsburgh and the numbers are actually real but they’re for a different kind of service entirely. Turns out (much to the dismay of the developers) in the real world, they’re numbers for a phone-sex hotline!

When reached for comment, The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann explained that this was an honest mistake on the part of the artists.

"What happened was, they put some phone numbers in the game and then they thought they could just change the area code to 555, then it's invalid because it's what they do in movies. But I guess that doesn't work when you have a 1-800 in front of it.

"We're now working to take it out.”

And work they did, as the folks at Naughty Dog have released a new patch earlier this evening which not only removes the numbers from the game but also makes an array of tweaks to its multiplayer mode.

These tweaks are:
  • Host migration has been improved. Losing connection to the host during a migration should occur less often
  • General crash when leaving multiplayer fixed
  • Intro camera fix for some introductory cut-scenes
  • Connectivity issues while playing have been tuned
  • If you disconnect or lose connection to the host, you will no longer advance a clan day. You will only advance a day if you are kicked from the match, or exit through the menu
  • Explosion Expert level 2 should be selectable now
  • The voting time for match selection has been reduced to 15 seconds
  • “No party” playlist options have been added to both Supply Raid and Survivors, players can only join this playlist solo
  • Melee against a downed character now uses the same range as normal melee
Well this story certainly put the “naughty” in Naughty Dog.

Sorry. I just had to get that joke out of my system.
