Politician Ralph Nader compares video game developers to "child molesters"

1/31/13 11:01am

Ralph Nader sees Inauguration 2013 as nothing more than political BS. "Tomorrow I’ll watch another rendition of political bullshit by the newly reelected president, full of promises that he intends to break just like he did in 2009,” the two-time Green Party presidential candidate told POLITICO on Sunday night at Busboys and Poets’ Peace Ball in Washington.

Where does video games come into this article? Well, in addition to criticizing Obama's gun control package last week after the December 14 shooting, he criticized violent video game developers as....get ready for this: "electronic child molesters."

According to him:

“We are in the peak of [violence in entertainment]. Television program violence? Unbelievable. Video game violence? Unprecedented.. I’m not saying he wants to censor this, I think he should sensitize people that they should protect their children family by family from these kinds of electronic child molesters.”

To his credit, at least he is being honest. But there is a fine line between honesty and stupidity.  His criticism towards video games and violence may have been considered valid had he not used the term "molester" as an analogy.

While I will admit that violence in entertainment probably has gone higher these days, that analogy is terrible.

Uh... if you more carefully read his quote, he's actually referring to the games and tv shows themselves as molestors, not the developers/producers. Which... yeah, I can see. If you're doing a crappy job as a parent, letting your kid get away with whatever they want and not teaching them the difference between what is acceptable in fantasy entertainment and reality, yeah I could see violent media contributing to a decline in that child's mental, emotional, and moral health. But, that's not the entertainment's fault, that's the result bad or negligent parenting, which is really what Mr. Nader should be criticizing.

WHAT?! Where is the logic in that comparison? Why would he say something like that?

Another crotchety old man who both doesn't understand whatever the hell he is talking about, and is saying this ONLY to try and better his political chances.

Thats why I hate the US political system folks. It encourages talking out your ass rather than ever really doing something. And, if you ever do manage to get something done, chances are that something was already happening when the last guy was in the White House.

Are you friggin' kidding me? I'd have to say by that very logic, parents are "electronically molesting" their own kids by buying them these games.

I don't think I can actually give a witty come back line to that. Guess I will go back to T-bagging halo players.

Just, why? Why are people in the White House who think it's more important to talk about violence in video games than more actual important things?

I told someone that "I hated the government", they asked why I wish i still knew them so i could show them this. Every time they open their mouth, it show how stupid they are.

This is unacceptiable. Placing an entire industry that is mostly innocent fun on the same pedistal as child molestation is way out of line. This man obviously hasn't bothered to actually play a game, or watch any footage beyond what suits his needs.

Ignorance is not an excuse in this case, he is wrong and he will always be wrong. People like this should not have a say in the running of a country in any shape, way or form. People expect the goverment and the officials that represent it to be well informed and knowledegable. He's just going to the lowest denominator rather than doiny any actual work.

All i can picture is an episode of "To Catch A Predator" with Mario going into the house and getting ambushed by Brian Williams, "oh, mama mia"
