Rant Time: Mac Computers
Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I don't hate Steve Jobs, anyone who works at Apple or the company itself. I own an Iphone and I love it very much. However, I can't keep the rage inside me anymore. I MUST give my honest take on Mac home computers after owning one for the past 3 or 4 years. Get ready, 'cause its time for.....
I have had it! I'm fed up with being left in the dust when it comes to gaming! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't own....... *ahem* Allow me to start at the beginning.
I don't own a PS3 or Xbox 360. In fact, I didn't own any game consoles until I was 10 years old. When I finally got one, it was a Wii. After that, I had no interest in Microsoft or Sony consoles and focused all my attention on Nintendo. Here's another fact. At the time, my PC was really out-dated and shitty. I couldn't even run the internet on it because it was so bad. I had got upgredes on it before but now it was to the point where there was no point. So my mother finally got a hint and chucked that hunk of junk! Soon after, we went looking for a new computer. But I wanted something that would last us forever and not require so much additional work to be done on it. (I know. Crazy dream wasn't it?)
My ideas brought us to the Apple section of Future Shop. We were told the Macs don't get viruses and don't need to be looked after very much! "Amazing!" I thought. My mom was pretty convinced too and we bought it that very day after I THOUGHT we had heard everything we needed to know. Oh the horrors that awaited me later that day.
Heres all the things wrong I found with Macs:
Everything is so "locked down". Everything needs a password. I guess it isn't SO bad because more protection on your computer is pretty good. But its a lot to write down and remember that you start to question the effectivness of all the passwords. Do we really need that many? Consider this more of a nit-pick rather than a problem.
The default internet browser sucks. It's my own fault for not upgrading to Google Chrome sooner. Before, I was using Safari. Pretty much the Apple equivilent to Internet Explorer only slightly less shitty. It worked fine for a while, but as time went on, it constantly crashed or froze when I was in the middle of something and I'd have to wait for it to reload. It's a first world problem, but it's a serious one!
Once something is wrong, you might as well throw the whole damn computer out. My Mac worked like a charm when I first got it. I won't deny that. But something must have happened during the time I used it because things keep crashing or not opening when I want them to. What did I do to make it so finiky!? I thought these things were meant to work top notch! Not work good for a while and then dumb down over time!
Now we come to the main attraction. Macs and games. I get that Macs arent designed for games, but at LEAST make it so that the games that Macs do support actually work! As many of you may know, I have a Steam account with several games on it. For the most part, the game worked fine. Until recently my copy of Team Fortress 2 lost compleate internet connection for no reason and can't load any servers of any kind which includes the item server. I didn't even do anything! I've tried everything I can to fix the problem. Restart Steam, re-download the game, open Preferences and so on. I've looked for help online but none of what I found helped me! I'm seriously getting pissed off here! EVERYBODY with a Steam account owns TF2 and I don't wanna be the guy who is left out! On top of the games not working properly, I'm beginning to question why I should even own a Steam account anymore! Its not like I have many options for games anymore! But heres the real kick in the balls. When I bought my Mac, they didn't tell me that they don't support many games! Are you fucking serious!? If someone walks up to you in an electronic store with a 12 year old asking for a new computer, you better be damn sure you explain the game situation first! I know I would! So it pretty much meant that all the money I spent on PC games before just went down the drain. That pisses me off to no extent. I know I should've done my research first, but hoe could I? IT'S NOT LIKE I HAD A WORKING COMPUTER AT THE TIME! Before you rush to the comments and tell me that I can get Windows on my Mac, I'll save you the trouble and tell you that I already know that. I even tried to get it once but it didn't work. At all. When I confronted someone at Future Shop about my problem, they told me that it wasn't worth it to get Windows on my current Mac. What's that supposed to mean!? That I have to constantly change my Computer on a yearly basis to keep it up to speed? Fuck that!
Whew! I need to calm down. To clear things up, I don't think any less of you if you own a Mac and like it. It just poses a real problem for me since I don't own a PS3 or Xbox 360. If you like Macs, fine. I can't tell you what to like or dislike. I just needed to let off some steam before returning to the internet. Macs are working computers, not gaming computers. I now know that. In conclusion, I don't hate Apple or anyone who works at the company. But they really need to step up their game if they want people to stop mocking their computers.
The reason why most people get Mac's are because they don't get viruses, but is it worth it if the internet runs like crap?
Well mac's are weird, especially when I use them.
Proud Windows user here. For the internet, I use Firefox.
This is exactly what your problem with Mac gaming problem reminds me of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8LR65U6-XU&feature=plcp
That picture at the end, priceless
Yeah, Apple has really tried to step up to the plate with gaming and they actually have gotten a lot better. Problem is that they still have a long way to go.
I use Internet Explorer as my browser and Bing as my search engine. :)
Mac's suporting so few games is the main reason why I'm most likely not to going to get one ever.
Get a mac if your primary need for computer hardware is video and audio editing (large selection of software/workflow options, and better support), and if you eventually plan on integrating into the broadcasting industry in some form, or if you like looking trendy in le coffee shop.
Other than that.. newp.
Well that sucks. I've always heard how Macs suck, but I never really knew any facts about them. Personally, I don't like PC gaming and prefer consoles so I never really cared about game compatibility on my computer. Anyways, hope you can get a new computer soon. : /
Man that gotta suck. I suggest getting a Pc hurr durr. But Money is the problem....
The reason for not so many Mac games: OpenGL. Most PC games are made with an API known as DirectX. Game developers find it much easier to work with, and many don't think it's worth converting their games to OpenGL because not only is it so damn hard, they figure there are not many Mac gamers anyway.
Macs aren't for serious gaming, because trust me, gaming on a Windows computer is as "hardcore" you can get if you're a gamer. Macs are for casual consumers, so if you wanna game or do some complicated stuff, you're fucked.
The platform is simple to use, but it's relatively hard to upgrade, and the "no virus" thing is bull crap. Macs have absolutely no defense against malware because they're so rare, people don't bother to write viruses and such because they don't care about Macs. And in the case where your Mac does get malware, you're fucked because you'll have no way to fix it. They don't make Anti-virus programs for Mac, so make a wrong move and download something wrong, you're fucked.
Macs aren't so bad. I heard they are easy to use, are very good for film editing, and if you use it casually, it won't be so bad...But if you're a gamer, you'll wish you sided with Windows.
