[Rumor] Could this be the future of PlayStation controllers

2/14/13 7:01pm

It seems as though more and more each day; rumors are being spread around regarding Sony’s upcoming press conference on February 20, which many predict is going to reveal the PlayStation 4. With that being said, one of the most important features of a console is the controller, and according to this image, the PlayStation 4 looks to be going down the touch screen controller path. Take a look for yourself…

Is that a dev kit the "controller" is being plugged into?

However, please keep in mind before you start hating (or loving) it that this is just a rumor, but could very much be true as another rumor was making it’s rounds saying that the new controller will indeed include a touch screen.

But what exactly will this additional screen be used for you ask? Well, judging by the picture it looks too small to play a full game on, but could very well allow the player to manage inventory or scroll through a game’s many menu screens in similar fashion to the Wii U’s GamePad just without the option to play a full game on the screen alone.

As for me, I think this idea of touch screen controllers being the future of console gaming is a little too much. On one side I very much see the value in it and the convenience, but at the end of the day I would prefer to just have a regular old controller in my hand rather then having to deal with a touch screen, Maybe it’s just that I’m a little too old school, but then again this is only a rumor.

What are your thoughts g1s? Do you think this is the controller of the future? Or would you prefer Sony stuck to the no-touchscreen-controller design? Let me know in that comment section down below!

I think that was exactly it indeed. Doesn't look much different than the PS3 one...

Well I'm glad they did make the screen huge as hell. I'd be interested in seeing screen shots of how it would be used. As in what information and buttons would be displayed on the controller. Personally I'm not that big into the idea. Again I feel like if Sony wants to do a Wii U route then just make the Vita a controller you can play games on the PS4 with.

That wouldn't be bad, and I imagine most games would use it conservatively, like for a phone in GTA or something. My only concern is that it will become a battery hog.

As I understand it this controller uses a touchPAD *not* a touchSCREEN.

I cannot for the life of me understand why these companies think new innovations means "changing the controller". I try to keep up on industry news as much as the next guy but where is the outcry from gamers? All the peripheral controllers that have launched in the last few years were met with lukewarm responses and lackluster game support. Either the interface (wii U) is a bit disorienting or no one really wants to wave their hands in the air, and wave them like they just don't care (wii mote, ps move, kinect) They really just don't care. What I consider to be innovation is content that works so seamlessly with the controller that I actually forget I am using a controller and am totally immersed.

Work on that side devs, make games that captivate me whether it's story or graphics or fine tuned controls so tight I really don't care what I'm holding as long as it works. Touch screens and motion sensors, even audible commands, detract from this, It forces me interact with the game from "outside" to influence "inside".

Ummm... I would appreciate the start and select buttons to be in the appropriate spots but it doesn't look like that will be happening any time soon.
