[Rumor] Google is ready for the console market with Ouya
What happens when the minds behind One Laptop per Child, Xbox, Peek, Color, and IGN join forces? You get the next generation of gaming console, but it is unlike anything that has come before it. This rumored $99 Android console called Ouya will connect to a TV and deliver a completely FREE gaming experience to everyone. How the hell will this work?
Well for $99, customers will be able to play anything and publish anything, so long as it’s free. In fact, the AngelList post claims that the hardware is meant “to be hacked”, with every customer getting a dev kit with their purchase. We still don’t have all the details or even know if this is real, but based on the Internet buzz; I bet Google will be making this announcement official soon enough.
Wanna know the quality of art it'll be? Go watch AVGN: Atari Porn.
Holy shit! If this thing actually exists, this could make video games and video game development even MORE accessible. This is the perfect step forward toward people finally accepting games as Art! =D
if this is legit i want one
nope, it's lamegrounds. you have to pay for the console as well as have ads bombarded towards you. Nope, I have newgrounds, kongregate, miniclip, etc. I don't need a cheap cash in with a poor "developer software"...
Google is also behind it so I doubt money will actually be a problem. And there will be a ton of ads to bring in more money.
Sounds like total bull shit to me.
How is this gonna make them money AFTER everyone has one?
looks like it's time to sue
isnt' that just newgrounds on ur tv?
Hehe . . .
the reality of this is really funny if you think about it. 10-20 years ago this might have been cool, but the a-holes and trolls on the internet these days would ruin this so fast.
well judging from the amount of user created levels in little big planet 1-2 that had either penises, or nudity or jokes about 9-11 A LOT
Oh god, I can see all the ads and pop-ups already....
Interesting... They're putting A LOT of faith in the consumer here...
Ouya? that reminds me of my g1 name
The idea sounds interesting but don't think it will be successful in the long run although it mostly depends on what non-community made games are on the service.
It all depends on how user-friendly this "developer kit" is. For me, the perfect developing platforming is something like RPG Maker - at its core so simple even a little child could make a quality videogame, but once you truly master every part of it the sky's the limit.
I don't think this is true. I am more convinced that this isn't true because of IGN's stake in all of this.
And of course, everyone on the internet is an upstanding citizen with the best intentions of creating quality, family-friendly entertainment. Give me a break! The first thing I thought of when I read this was how many people are going to be banned from seeing how obscene a product they can create within the limits of the moderators.
This could be really good or really bad, there's NO in between on this.
Still, $99 isn't too hard to swallow, I'd be willing to take the chance.
