[Rumor] Microsoft is working on a subsidized Xbox 360

5/2/12 5:00pm

The Verge is reporting that Microsoft will be launching that previously rumored Xbox “lite” as early as next week. For $99 you will get a new Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect and a two year subscription to Xbox Live. The subscription will run you $15 per month and provides Gold member status, with some unnamed streaming bonuses.

By The Verge’s calculation, that puts the cost of any current option around $420 and the potential Xbox lite bundle costing around $459, just paid over time. Customers who choose Xbox lite will still get the 2 year warranty and are of course subject to a termination fee if they cancel their contract early. With E3 just around the corner, I would expect to hear more about this soon. Please, Please, Please include the Star Wars bundle!

It's all a marketing ploy to make you buy the other bundles.

Not buying an Xbox. Nope. If I wanted to pay for online gaming, I'd play World of Warcraft. I find it genuinely shocking that there's people out there who pay $250 or so a year just so they could endlessly grind levels on Call of Duty and teabag people on Halo. I'd like people to just stop so it no longer becomes an acceptable business model for people to keep paying and paying for a game. Death to the online pass as well.

Agreed on all fronts, I'd rather pay slightly more upfront for an online game (with no pass), but this continually paying for it model isn't very practical. It forces the mentality that you have to get your moneys worth, which makes the player very closed minded. I have over 300 games for PS3 both retail and PSN releases, my tastes are extremely varied and the vast majority are single player games as I prefer the immersive escapism. However, just because I prefer single player experiences doesn't mean that I don't like or want to play online. My experiences on playing online range from great to playing against total douchebaggery, but at least I'm not paying for it!!

4gb unit is worth nothing at all. I wouldnt even pay $100 for it, but I can see people who want kinect getting this.

4GB Kinect isn't worth it at all in my opinion. Can't install a game. Can't download a whole lot. I have about 3 or 4 times more than that in Rock Band files alone. (quiet - I have fun).

In this day and age, are we really surprised when a company is out to make money?

I'm all for companies making money, it's their way to keep going, but this marketing strategy is taking the piss!
