[Rumor] Sony might move away from the DualShock with Orbis

1/18/13 3:48pm

With the Orbis coming very close to being announced, everyone is curious if Sony will revisit the Boomerang design for their controllers. While no one can confirm the resurgence of such a monstrosity, there are rumors of multiples controllers on the horizon.

First is the Orbis pad might include biometric sensors and a touch screen. A second source reiterates this by stating they are "trying to emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita".  There are even rumors that due to the PS3 controllers being Bluetooth, they’ll be compatible with Orbis.

Though it sounds like PlayStation is aping Nintendo, a lot of these rumors make sense given the Cross-Play nature of Vita and the accessibility of Bluetooth. The same source mentions the Orbis “will be revealed in a matter of weeks, not months”. So I guess we’ll know soon enough.

Whenever I'm at home playing my PSP, I always hook up the cables to my TV. Using the PSP itself as a controller isn't a new technology, it's been like that since before the Wii U tablet (though, admittedly, I don't know if the Gameboy player on the Gamecube came first.)

To be fair this is probably at least half-way inspired by the PS3/Vita connectivity which is an idea I think they had before they knew about the Wii U.

And they got that from the Gamecube + GBA.

Hey guys...you know how Sony has that controller that everyone loves? Yeah, the only one with a good d-pad since the saturn? They are getting rid of it...because that worked out so well the first time. Time to stockpile them like wavebirds.

The only one with a good d-pad? Yeah, thats a laugh. The Sony d-pad is pretty alright and the 360 one obviously sucks but its pretty universally agreed that Nintendo makes the best d-pads. You might say "yeah, but their hardware is underpowerd" or whatever but that doesn't change the fact that the d-pads Nintendo uses are by far the best. They invented it and they probably patented the shit out of it so I assume thats why the other versions suck.

they should just pack a PS Vita with the Orbis and just have that as the controller. there are tons of them just sitting around not selling.

Do people seriously think Sony just magically came up with working prototypes as a response to the WiiU? The WiiU hasn't been a homerun as of yet. This fits exactly into Sony's recent strategy, Using the Vita has limited use like this for the PS3 already. I thought the WiiU pad looked absolutely stupid before trying it out, it's a really nice controller. Hopefully Sony can make something of similar quality.

How very surprising. Now we wait for the Sony defense force to storm in and explain how this isn't at all similar to Nintendo's strategy.
