[Update] 24 employees laid off from LightBox as they become a mobile developer

Update: Gamasutra was able to receive the official word from LightBox president Dylan Jobe, who explained that over half of the studio would be let go as they shifted towards iOS development. The 24 staff members let go will receive a severance and Jobe says they are "still very close" to Sony. We have yet to hear back from Sony, but for now, here is Jobe's official statement.

"The reason for the layoffs is a strategic shift in our product development as we move forward with a very focused and self-funded team to bring our next game to iOS devices"

According to credible sources Sony has pulled financial support from LightBox Interactive, developer of the PlayStation exclusive Starhawk.

Sources say shortly after a team meeting at LightBox, "second and third tier animators" began firing off emails looking for new jobs; meaning the lack of funding is affecting all employees and not just the high level staff.

We've reached out to Sony but they have yet to comment as of press time.  With that said, judging by a tweet last night from Lightbox President, Dylan Jobe,  it sure looks like bad news was coming.

We'll follow up with more information as it becomes available.
