[Rumor] S.T.A.L.K.E.R. IP now in the hands of... Bethesda?

4/26/12 6:00pm
tl;dr

Bethesda now owns the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. IP. Like it or not.

For those familiar with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. they know how fun and interesting the game can be. So the news of its sequel's cancellation has caused many gamers (myself included) saddened by the loss of a great series. However Bethesda has stepped in and bought up the IP from its original owners: GSC Game World.

The news comes from the Russian site: stalker-gsc.ru which reads:

"Я понял, что данная концепция сталкера не будет интересна многим игрокам и принял решение удалить все наработки. Анонса не будет, вместо этого будут показано все то, что успела сделать команда без меня. Бренд S.T.A.L.K.E.R переходит в руки Bethesda games. Я ухожу из разработки игр - надоело..."

Roughly translated, it reads:

"I understand that this conception will be not interesting for many gamers. I decided to remove all the work. Announcement will not be shown instead, all that the team managed to do without me. STALKER brand into the hands of Bethesda games. I'm leaving the game development - fed up with ..."

While there could be an error in the translation. It seems as though Bethesda has another IP on their hands. What will they do with it? Make it into another series using their Gamebryo system, or perhaps they just bought it so other companies couldn't purchase it to make a Fallout competitor.

What do the g1's think? Good move because we could possibly see more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, or would you prefer Bethesda didn't get their hands on it.

STALKER is one of my favourite games of all time. Don't screw this up, Bethesta

I'm going to say this now if Bethesda holds the rights to STALKER, I think they are going to have ID software working on it, Because if you look at their website, they are looking to hire more people right now...

Having not played STALKER I can't necessarily be for or against this. This is possibly the first time I've heard STALKER and Fallout mentioned in the same breath, but that could just be me.

UPDATE: The Rumor is FALSE!! the Official STALKER Facebook page said "Sergiy has not sold the IP rights to anyone."

Yes, I found this out and was about to update the article. However it seems as if the time for that is long gone.

Although, in this case. I am very glad that I am wrong.

I can't see this being any good if true since S.T.A.L.K.E.R is a lot like the new Fallouts.

If this is True... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... well there goes the STALKER series. From now on it looks like we can now look forward to Fallout New Chernobyl staring The Stalker, instead. AKA Oblivion with Guns st in Russia.

RIP S.T.A.L.K.E.R. You were what Fallout 3 SHOULD have been.

OK so whats the difference between both series, because Fallout 3 is considered by many to be a great game. Also you piked my curiosity I should try out STALKER one of these days.

STALKER plays more like Farcry crossed with Deus Ex with a survival horror twist. It has realistic gun behavior, Damage, Item wear & tear, a barter system, along with NATURAL skill progression (the more you use/do something the the more skilled/effective you become at it), & factions with dynamic loyalty based your actions & alliance. Depending on what you do and who you befriend individual characters & NPC hostility/friendliness will change. Its set in a post Apocalyptic Chernobyl now called "The Zone" after some mysterious cataclysm that has caused spacial anomalies & once again irradiated the area. The game plops you down in the middle of The Zone with amnesia, a PDA that contains few leads to who you are & who tried to kill you to chase after & tells you to "have fun"
