Sakurai feels the Super Smash Bros. roster is at its limit

7/3/12 3:00pm

We’ve already heard of the collaboration going on between Team Sora and Namco Bandai for the new Super Smash Bros. We also had a chance to get a sneak peak of the art thanks to a recent tweet in the banner above. But now it has come to light in Nintendo Power that the roster might not be changing as much as people expect. The game’s director Masahiro Sakurai admitted in an interview that “a change of direction may be what's needed”.

"It isn't a matter of ‘If the next game has 50 characters, that'll be enough… There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive."

Where Super Smash Bros. started with a 12 character roster, Melee and Brawl topped 25 and 35 characters, respectively. Plus, with Namco Bandai playing such a large part in the games production, it seems like the opportunity for crossovers is endless. So it doesn’t look like you will be getting a huge roster, but if you could have one Namco Bandai character in SSB4, who would they be?

Really though, who else is left?

There is still a lot left, it's more about improving balance now and hopefully removing clones.

I think we're possibly reading too much into this, that it isn't what SA is making it out to be. However, if it IS the case, yes, I would be very disappointed. I'm willing to wait an extra 6-12 months if it means adding 20 additional characters but keeping them balanced. Balance is important, but part of a new Smash is the new roster. Yeah, I can easily give up some of the clones, but if they can avoid it I would rather they just increase the roster size.

If this is true then I hope that Sakurai is just referring to the 3DS version. Otherwise it would not be a wise business move.

i call bullshit saying because of the size number that you can't balance the game out because of the large numbers, SSB has allways been more about the crossover then the balance, we want to see more characters from different games fight each other ove rbalance

Seriously if it gets much bigger half the characters won't even be used. Right now as it is half the characters in brawl already aren't used.

But that what happens, everybody has there preferences and that won't changed if the new games has still the same number. Only half the characters will be used. why? well coupel things 1. At lease 12 characters have stayed right through the 3 and most likly will be in the 4th, so people will go to the ones they use to play first, its like street fighters in cross over games, people will go to them to figth in comps. 2. People have there fav's and don't usually go out of there way to play with all characters after a while, i have about 5 fighters i mainly use in brawl. People will have preferences and over time will mainly use them 3. So what we should cut out all the characters that aren't popularly used, what about that one character that some is really good at and no one else is. Its all opinions and peoples ability

Plus everybody who hates brawl bitched sayign there wasn't enough characters in brawl from melee

It would be commercial suicide for Smash 4 not to have a bigger roster than Brawl did. I appreciate the new focus on balance, but there still has to be a few new additions. Anyone expecting no new characters/ massive roster cuts is just stupid.

On a related note, I'm sick and tired of people whining about clone characters. Most of the clones have different enough properties on their attacks to make them worth keeping. Also, many alleged clones barely share any moves with the characters they supposedly copy.

No matter what happens please, please, please! Keep Sonic as a playable character.
