Sam Raimi departs the World of Warcraft for the merry old land of Oz

7/18/12 3:45pm

Sam Raimi (the director of the Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogies) revealed at Comic Con that he is no longer the director of the WoW  movie.

It turns out Legendary Films had to go in a new direction after Raimi had to put his Warcraft story on the backburner so he could dedicate his time to filming his upcoming epic Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Here’s what Raimi himself had to say during a brief chat with CraveOnline:

"Actually, they don't have me directing World of Warcraft [film] any more, because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.”

Wait. Does this mean Legendary has been producing the film without a director since 2010?  Jeez. I don't think they could have made too much progress over the past two years without somebody at the helm (especially if they had to re-work the story from the ground up) but at least we know the movie is still a thing.

me ago. Hollywood has yet to make a truly great one and frankly I doubt WoW would make for a good movie. A game like Max Payne had a great story, an interesting visual style an birthday limousine

I stoped caring about movies based on video games a long time ago. Hollywood has yet to make a truly great one and frankly I doubt WoW would make for a good movie. A game like Max Payne had a great story, an interesting visual style and the gameplay was great and could easily been used for a movie. Especially if they had made it clear that to the audience that this story take place within a video game. The characters would be unaware of the fact ofcourse but how awesome would it be to see Max be shot ten times, only to recover thanks to some aspirins? That would have been both funny and cool if it had been done right. The movie however... was a train wreck. What chances does WoW, a game without a true protagionist or much of a story have?

Hmm, I wonder who the project has been given too. Peter Jackson would be fantastic.
