Remember when Atlus was up for bidding after their parent company, and SEGA "we sued Level 5 and can't manage our own studios" of all companies was the only one named out of all the bidders?
On September 18th, 2013, it was confirmed that SEGA SAMMY has acquired Atlus for $140 million dollars via press release. This gives them access to the popular Megami Tensei and Persona brands, as well as all of the assets associated with Atlus. The date of transfer for the assets and liabilities is scheduled for November the 1st, and have established a new subsidiary called "SEGA DREAM CORPORATION" in order to acquire Index Corporation's assets and liabilities.
"Notice is hereby given that SEGA DREAM CORPORATION, which was newly established as a wholly owned subsidiary by SEGA CORPORATION (“SEGA”), a subsidiary of SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC. (the “Company”), has concluded a business transfer agreement with Index Corporation (“Index”) for the purpose of revitalization of the business. Under the agreement, SEGA will take over the operations conducted by Index, the bankrupt company that applied to the Tokyo District Court for the commencement of civil rehabilitation proceedings effective from June 27, 2013."
I be will discussing the positives (very few, mind you) and negatives of this acquisition in the future for SEGA SAMMY and Atlus once I stop seeing red, so instead, I will leave you with this happy image:
Yes, Atlus has made iOS games for a while. That doesn't make the focus on such any less worrisome.
According to NintendoEverything
, CEO of Index Corporation, Naoto Hiraoka, has responded to the concern caused by this acquisition:
-After thanking the customers for their support, and apologizing for the concern caused, Hiroaka-san explains that Atlus has a very good relationship with Sega and a considerable business synergy. By using Sega’s solid distribution network he expects the company to expand further.
-This new relationship will allow the two companies to complement each other’s niche in the consumer game business, and Sega’s Know-how will enhance Atlus’ brand.
-The continuity of Atlus’ business is considered to be in very good shape.
-At the moment all the employees of the consumer game department of the company are focusing on the development of future titles, and Atlus is looking forward to tackle new challenges in the future.
