A Sequel to Tomb Raider is in the Works
This morning Phil Rogers, CEO for Square Enix America and Europe, confirmed that a sequel to the recent Tomb Raided re-boot is in the works for next gen consoles. We first heard about a potential sequel when a comic was announced and its writer said it would follow cannon and "lead directly into the sequel." So naturally suspicions arose. With Phil's statement its early, but its official.
To be honest I'm a little suprised. If you remember Square Enix released a statement classifying Tomb Raider as "unsuccessful" despite its millions of sales. I'd love to see what they need for this upcoming title to be successful, I'm guessing its about 20 million in sales, a unicorn's horn, and the arc of the covenant.
if the last game was really a failure because of a too large budget, I dont think this next game will have the same problem. that game went through ALOT of developement and preproduction cycles while trying to reimagine the franchise. lots of marketing and engine costs were also a large factor in the huge budget. the budget this time just may be much less than the budget for the first. this game also already has a large fanbase. millions of sales is millions of sales, and it seems most people enjoyed the game. i think profit would be much better this time around.
The biggest reason they considered it s failure was due to improper projections of sales, it has been listed as the best selling game of the franchise so far. So if you take away the inflated projections of sales that square had, every other detail of the game, from the dev's reported sales being better the first week and overall, to all over TR games, to the reviews which were around 8/10's on average, it was a success of a launch. As it is now they have a solid core engine for the game, so they can just create assets for the game. The engine was buolt to look MUCH better than what it was in xbox or ps3, as playing it on a mid to decent gaming rig will prove. So really they just need to make the next game look as great as it can as a dx11 game and shift it to consoles. Instead of downgrading details to allow it to run on old hardware, they just tweak a few small details and likely the xbon and ps4 versions will look almost exactly like the pc version (though i am sure pc users will have the ability to tweak it enough to get a mild edge).
When you had a good re-launch and a ton of assets, animations, game design and actors lined up.. why not make the sequal? Really all they need is a great story and tons of content. Since the core is there, the investment is significantly less than the first time. And if the second sells well, they may increase the first game's sales a bit too(though admittedly it may not be significant).
I'm psyched to see what happens.
If this game was as big of a failure as Square Enix claimed, making a sequel is a pretty dumb idea, considering that it might not sell more than the first one did. Their expectations are just too god damn high these days.
Know square enix's impossible goals it will still probably be considered a failure according to them even if it does well like the first game did. And Chad? you said it would take 20 million in sales, a unicorn's horn, and the arc of the covenant for the sequel to sell well..... well you forgot that they also need to sacrifice the blood of a dozen virgins and pull their head's out of their own asses.. all impossible tasks. lol
