Sim City may finally get the offline mode fans have been clamoring for
Remember that catastrophic Sim City launch where servers were crashing and players were demanding an offline mode? Well guess what's probably getting an offline mode now?!
This morning Maxis GM Patrick Buechner had a lot to say about Sim City. From it two big questions were answered. First he let it be known that the Maxis team has been working on providing players with an offline mode, he can't make any promises but they're trying.
The second was a response to players asking for the ability to manage larger cities. Unfortunately after looking into it, it seems their Glassbox Engine wouldn't be able to handle larger cities and confirmed that that will NOT be added to the game. So there you have it, the thing they said was impossible seems possible and the thing that should be possible isn't.
The game should've launched with an offline mode, that is all.
If memory serves, weren't some hackers actually able to build outside of the current city limits?
Remember when you just popped in a disc and just played a game on PC? When I played some old PC games (for kids) I had internet yes, crap internet, but still it wasn't required. Imagine if the NES had primitive internet? World 8-4: Thank you Mario, but our Princess is in another castle that can only be accessed on a crap online service.
Is there any wonder why everyone hates EA?
A supposed next gen engine can't handle something that has been done in the past ?
Let's be honest here, Sim City is not a graphical powerhouse and the SUPPOSED system of people actually having a routine and going about their lives and having a job, etc. is just smoke & mirrors. You click on a person (we presume person because you either can't see them because they are in a building or car and when they are out in the open they might as well be stick figures) and they will be doing something. But it's as randomly generated as it gets.
The auto-terraforming is a goddamn pain in the ass and since you can't do it yourself, have fun seeing your small town (these aren't cities ...) get mangled in to a mess of elevation differences because the game apparently thought it would be better that way.
For me, this game is Maxis's fall from grace. Horrible horrible excuses for a SimCity game ...
the engine can't handle it? YES IT FUCKEN CAN!. Excuses, i was like "Offline mode?" Awesome! I might actually ge.... NOPE, NOPE, NOPE, NOPE.
Large cities and a transit system consisting of more than roads? No? :(
