Sony considering having the PS4 continuing the HD re-release series to include PS3 games

2/25/13 8:00pm

During an interview with Eurogamer, SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida states the company is considering another option in regards to backwards compatibility besides cloud services.

Similar to the PS3 having HD re-releases of PS2 games, the PS4 could be getting re-releases of PS3 games with Sony considering a few games at the moment. The games specifically mentioned included previous HD remakes of the God of War set and Shadow of the Colossus along with Beyond and The Last Guardian from the PS3.

"...Beyond is a big PS3 game loads of people want to play, and The Last Guardian is something I really want to play -- I want to play them on the new console," stated Eurogamer. "Because once that new console comes out, I'm going to move the PS3 to a different part of the room, you know what I mean? So is it something you've talked about?"
To which Yoshida replied: "Yes, so, we've been making some of our PS2 games available upgraded and published on PS3, and in some cases like God of War or Shadow of the Colossus, some people say this is the better version of the original game, so something like that, we find it very satisfying from a development standpoint, and those who create original titles are thrilled to see more people playing their games, because of the update. So I think for some games it will make sense for us to look at, but we are not talking about any more about our titles other than the four titles."

The plan would allow Sony to get around emulation issues involving PS3 games while also continuing the HD re-release/remake series with the PS4.

The announcement was also in reaction to previous announcements from Sony which stated the PS4 wouldn't allow direct PS3 disc-based or PSN-based backwards compatibility to be possible.

Sony, giving people the options to play both new and old games; and yet gamers still find a way to complain, as if they are being forced to buy something they don't want. What a joke the community has become.

That's a dumb idea...PS3 games are already HD after all. Ya know what I would gladly pay for though? The definitive HD .Hack series. Put all 4 games onto a blu-ray disc and take my money please.

Sega Genesis games were also in HD during their time, but as time passes, the definition for HD also changes.

Awesome! Now I can rebuy some of my PS3 games on my PS4 remade in HD.... oh wait! The novelty has kinda worn off Sony. Upscaling from 720p to 1080p (or even your rumored 4k support) isn't a big enough incentive to re-buy games we've already bought once or even twice over already.

The PS4 would not re-release PS2 games. It would re-release PS3 games. So hopefully, you haven't had a reason to buy 2 copies of said games already. Obviously, this works for people who don't own a PS3, but are considering the PS4.

Not likely to care since the only thing worthwhile in this development is fixing the framerate in some games. Well, actually, just one and I would rather have it on Vita (Heavenly Sword).

Or Sony could just let people play their PS3 games on the PS4. I mean, they've offered backwards compatibility in their past consoles, so why not continue it?
