At this year’s E3, Sony showed off a brand new trailer for the forthcoming Ratchet and Clank movie, yet in terms of big screen announcements, the company didn’t end there, as a new Sonic the Hedgehog movie is also on its way, blending together live-action video and CGI.

As described by Sony Pictures’ head of production, Hannah Minghella, “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base.”

Sega’s speedy mascot has been a gaming icon since the company’s early rivalry with Nintendo, going on to sell over 140 million games during the $1 billion franchise’s 23-year history. Thankfully, for fans, animation studio Marza, is familiar with said history, working on games such as 2010’s Sonic Colors and 2011’s Sonic Generations, and will be at the helm of the animation side of things for the movie.

“Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before,” Minghella went on to say.

What exactly will Marza be putting on screen? Well, the plot so far involves the series’ main antagonist, Dr Eggman, along with “some of the most infamous characters in the franchise,” whilst “captur[ing] Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit.” However, nothing further was revealed.

Those wondering what a CGI/live-action hybrid Sonic movie looks like can take in Eddie Lebron and Blue Core Studios’ Sonic the Hedgehog fan film, which released for free last year and currently boasts over 2 million views on Youtube.

Video game movies seem to be the new craze amongst companies, as Sonic joins the likes of Uncharted, Angry Birds, Assassin’s Creed and the aforementioned Ratchet and Clank who are all just some of the other franchises getting the Hollywood treatment.

Sonic’s debut in cinemas will to be penned by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux who are most notably also scribes on the upcoming live-action version of the popular 60s cartoon, The Jetsons. Neal H. Mortiz of 22 Jump Street, Fast & Furious 7, I am Legend, and more will be producing the Blue Blur’s film alongside Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi of Marza.

So, g1s, what do you think? Would you buy a ticket to see the blue blur tear up the big screen? Or does Sonic belong in consoles and not movie theaters? Be sure to leave your thoughts down below!
