Sony says SOCOM is definitely not retired

8/1/12 9:00am

When Sony closed Zipper Interactive many people thought SOCOM was done for, but during an interview Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida had this to say

"IS SOCOM done? It's not done. We never definitely retire any franchise. It's sometimes great to have a fresh look at the classics that we have. We are launching a new Sly Cooper game this year after so many years. Never say never."

He also goes on to say that the first two SOCOM games released in 2002 (SOCOM 1) and 2003 (SOCOM 2) for the PS2 are still very popular with fans.

So just have some hope and we might see the Seals return sometime in the future.

I've been a SOCOM vet since the games first launch 10 years ago. It's nice to know Sony isn't going to kill the series, but...my hope for a new socm game is...down the hole...

Sony? If you're reading this, get a team together with members of the original SOCOM team and remake SOCOM 2. Include the smaller maps from SOCOM 2 and CA, port the game into the MAG/SOCOM 4 engine, give the game a graphical upgrade, give it a steady framerate of either 30 or 60, add new weapons and playable character for both sides, and do some balance tests.

I'm sure a lot of people will be a SOCOM 2 remake. It's iconic and it was the PS2's Halo and Counter Strike. It was HUGE! Hell, I think it rivals them both!

I would be happy to buy it. I'm sitting here staring at my old Copy of SOCOM 2...brings back memories...the maps were perfect, the weapons were all unique, the game modes were fun, the game was perfect~

I should show this article to my Hardcore Socom buddy. He's been on suicide watch ever since they said they were retiring this franchise o_e

Being drafted is much more fun, and cheaper.

Here is the problem. I never felt like Zipper was doing a bad job with the franchise. I think Sony made some mistakes with the PSP spin-offs, but in reality, the audience isn't large enough to justify the costs behind developing those games. Maybe that will change in the future, but for now I can't see why they would bring it back.

To me i always thought SOCOM should be on the PC. They should let SOE take a shot and see how it go's

Socom 2 was GREAT, like Halo 2 kind of great. Probably my favorite shooter game of all time. 3 introduced vehicles and huge maps, which killed it. Confrontation was a low budget attempt at reviving 1 and 2, which was too rushed, and 4 was a disappointment. That is the story of Socom. The thing that made 2 great was that they kept the best old maps from number 1 and then added some of the best maps ever EVER in a game. Also having levels where one team storms a base and the other protects it, and still having it perfectly balanced was a miracle.

PS are there any other G1's out there who played Socom 2 Canada West back in the day?
