Sony shuts down Zipper Interactive
Editor's Note: It always sucks to see a studio shut down. Here's hoping the members of the Zipper development team quickly land back on their feet.
Last week it was rumored that Zipper Interactive was being shutdown by Sony. Yesterday, Sony confirmed that it is indeed shutting down Zipper Interactive. The company sent the following statement regarding the closure to Game Informer:
Zipper was founded in 1995 and acquired by Sony in 2006. It's a sad day when a studio shuts down, but for some reason a lot of people saw this coming with MAG and SOCOM 4 not doing so well in sales. With that said, best of luck to all that worked at Zipper and I hope the people who work there find a new home.
So g1's, what was your favorite Zipper Interactive game. Mine would be SOCOM 2.
I hate it when studios are closed down by a bigger company that acquired them. At least they made a few games when they where owned by sony. When ea acquired Pandemic ea only let them make 1 game before shutting them down.
That makes alot of 2nd parties then. Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch and so on. First parties would be Santa Monica studios or SCE Japan.
I never played many of their games, nor really liked many, but I do have to say it's still sad to see a game company go under. My best wishes to those from Zipper in recovering.
True, but when I say "2nd party" I mean that Sony themselves did not develop the games, the company owned by them did.
But regardless, I'm hoping the employees are able to find new employment, and hopefully Sony will stop messing up so much.
No a first party developer is owned by someone (in this case Sony) and a 2nd party developer would be a developer under contract.
No, a first party would be Sony. Zipper was owned by Sony, therefore it is a 2nd party.
Same. I had fun with it. I still hop on now and again.
what the hell are you talking about? Zipper was a first part developer.
MAG deserved to do better in sales. IT was a lot of fun
They can't keep their 2nd party developers going.
What do u mean? People saw this coming ever since MAG came out.
Sony just can't seem to do anything right nowadays can they?
sony you killed one of my favorite developers, and with that my first online console memorys & my respect for your company has finally gone its going to be alot to get it back
It wasn't just SOCOM 4. MAG didn't do so well too.
So many studio shutdowns, so little time.
Aw man... the guys of SOCOM 4 got shut down? I mean... was SOCOM 4 that bad in sales?
Deathdrome for Windows 98, I loved me some Deathdrome.
Goodbye, Zipper Interactive. I hardly knew ya.
They should work for Retro Studios so they can make me a new Star Fox.
