South Park RPG in the works

12/1/11 8:40pm

While South Park has become a cult phenomenon ever since it aired almost 15 years ago, the series never really found a foothold in the gaming world. Acclaim tried with a variety of titles like Chef's Luv Shack and South Park Rally back in the day but even though some of the games were pretty decent, they never really reached the high standards set by the original show.

Flash forward to the present, and all this might change. As revealed by Game Informer, a South Park RPG is in the works over at Obsidian Entertainment, with the game's story being penned by none other than the show's original creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Simply titled South Park: The Game, it will be a full-scale RPG for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. From the press release:

“South Park: The Game” is an epic role-playing adventure that will allow the user to befriend Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny and explore the quiet little mountain town like never before."

And...that's about all that is known about the game at this point. More info will be revealed in Game Informer's January issue, shipping to subscribers in Dec 2011. If any g1s happen to get this issue before us, feel free to let us know in the comments or tips@screwattack.com.

With Obsidian developing and the show's creators on board, naturally hopes are  high that this game will finally be a worthy videogame adaption of the show. What do you guys think? Could it work?

I hope they make this a sandbox rpg, something like South Park meets GTA or Saints Row. At least then when you are board of the actual gameplay you can turn on some cheats and chaos will rein in South Park! ( wait that is kind of how it always is..) I'm excited, I hope they make it a good one!

umm... no... I don't care if obsidian will make it, remember when RPG giant Bioware worked on the sonic rpg? In my opinion it did horribly, so don't bite my head off, but atleast it had a workable story.

You're working with southpark, a show about kids, their idiot parents/teachers and a crude fat ass taking stabs at the current pop culture in a city (it is funny at times, so don't bite my head off here as well. im telling it as it is). Even with the creator of the show, it will be restrictive in that sense, and with that aspect being hard to over come, it most likely will be a hindrance to the experience. Along with that, are you honestly going to expect them to be going around oblivion/fallout style? no, it's most likely going to be a standard rpg much like dark brotherhood was, but playing "boarder patrol" and/or fighting the weird monsters that kill Kenny, and instead of touchpad quicktime you get kinect or motion plus quicktime! and have some "dumbed down" version for the PC (mastur ras to bitch about). I honestly do not see this working well, im sorry.

I don't mean to be a downer, but if Matt Stone and Trey Parker are doing all the voiced like with the show, it will put me off, because after Fallout 3 and Oblivion, i've had enough of hearing the same voices over and over again, it get's so mundane and annoying.

Dude seriously??. Who the hell else would do the voices?? Matt and Trey are South Park and Isaac Hayes and his character Chef are both dead.

Hearing Matt Stone and Trey Parker's same set of voices over and over again gets mundane and annoying, so it wouldn't hurt if they at least hired some extra voice actors to provide some variety
