Square Enix whiplash: No personal user info accessed in hack

12/16/11 3:11pm

Square Enix Members can breathe a small sigh of relief, in the wake of a recent server hack.

First, a ton of accounts were thought to be compromised, now nobody has been compromised. Back and forth, back and forth... At least this time it's a positive change of story.

"Based on our investigation, we have found no evidence at this point that any personal information was accessed," an email from the publisher read.

1.8 million user accounts were originally thought to have been compromised in what the company is now describing as a "limited server intrusion."

While Square Enix  insists "user login credentials and credit card information are not stored on the affected server," it does store sensitive information like passwords and email addresses, which the intruders luckily were unable tap into.

Hopefully Square Enix isn't just downplaying the situation.  I don't want to have to turn around tomorrow and report that a crap-load of people's accounts actually were compromised.
