StarCraft 2 is getting a leveling system with Heart of the Swarm
I don’t often question the meta-game of gaming. It makes perfect sense to me that having an underlying achievement system further encourages gamers to play a game. But when Blizzard revealed that StarCraft 2 would implement a multiplayer leveling system, my brain did a 180. Are there really so few people playing StarCraft 2 that we need another meta-game to encourage gamers? Here is the official statement:
So it is only a leveling system for your ePenis and not a leveling system that makes you stronger. So the whole issue of balance should remain largely unaffected. I still don’t know why anyone cares though. If you’re into StarCraft 2 multiplayer, it is a sort of commitment to dedicate yourself to. Adding a leveling system won’t help discourage you from getting your ass beat in Diamond league and having a snazzy avatar won’t matter either. I think the game is good enough to be enjoyed without an unnecessary leveling system.

Hey Blizzard if you want more players how about removing that stupid need to connect online to play.... seriously some people want to play Single Player but can't because of that, and some are having problems with your servers.... I love Starcraft and Warcraft 3 but I hate Starcraft 2.

While it is disheartening to see Blizzard resorting to the old Skinner Box method... it's not a bad change. Although it is definitely redundant if you think about all the rankings and stuff they've already put in. This is just pure laziness and again, conservatism. Nothing new, and nothing creative
There also could've been better ones/ways to do this...
The challenges they made that rewards you with portraits were pretty solid to begin with. Also, there are Ranks. Why add progression to game that already has its own unique progression system? Moreover, if they really want, hey can simply incorporate Rankings and/or Portraits into a progression system. There is absolutely no need to include Leveling.
If they were to introduce a leveling system, they need it to actually have some sort of meat... Maybe allow custom games apart from Ladder games, where the leveling system actually gives you stat points in which you can actually level up aspects of the game. It'd be cool if the leveling system can affect the actual RTS game. Like I can level up and throw all my stats on build time, so everything builds extra fast or something like that. It doesn't need to be balanced, as it's not the Ladder game, so who cares? It's just something that veteran players can meddle with if they want to
Besides, who else is going to be HotS? Especially after the lackluster WoL, only diehard SC fans will buy it.. so why not treat them?

Why did League of Legends have to be so much more popular then Sc2 to the point where Blizzard is relying on cheap gimmicks like this.
It's Blizzard fault, they had a chance to fix SC2, jump on the glitches and bugs and issues like Lol did, and draw players into their game and keep it fun, but they f*ckin blew it.
The "arcade" system custom game is a joke, we need casuals to bring a large audience like LoL did but nope, they didn't. The competitive multiplayer constant nerfs, buffs, nerfs. buffs made it inconsistent and really unenjoyable.
TL;DR Blizzard thanks for killing a great community. I give sc2 a year before it's dead. There go my 60$
