Team Meat finally lets the Mew-Genics details loose!

2/23/13 10:08pm

After about 5 months of teasing, the fine gentlemen at Team Meat have finally decided to give a comprehensive explanation as to what its Super Meat Boy follow up Mew-Genics actually is.

According to Edmund McMillen, it’s a “cross between The Sims and Pokemon with a sprinkling of Animal Crossing and a dash of Tamagotchi” or in other words, it’s a “cat lady simulator”. I know it sounds weird but it’ll make sense soon I promise you.

McMillen couldn’t quite figure out how to describe the game with a straight forward/faced explanation, so he gave a basic explanation of how the game works with a humorous story from his last beta test, which you should totally read.

Here’s my understanding of how the game works:

Players won’t be playing as a cat or any of the five human characters that have been revealed. They will instead be filling in the role of a cat lady who takes in and cares for several kitties in a stereotypical cat lady house. It’s the job of this cat lady to take care of a bunch of cats with their own unique personalities that will have to be considered and catered to. If the feelings of the cats aren’t taken into consideration when each care taking decision is made, they could actually die. You know typical cat lady stuff.

She can take in strays or pick up a cat from the shelter or pet shop (or perhaps both) or she can take care of one of Dr. Beanie’s test subjects…which happen to be cats also.

Anyway, once the cat lady has her litter of cats (which will be unique to each individual player), she’ll have to make sure they’re all fed and happy. And part of making them happy is making sure they have a mate in which to…well… long story short, she’ll have to raise the new born kittens too. Kittens which will inherit genes from both parents. Genes such as physical attributes and medical conditions like say narcolepsy.

Now the cat lady has even more cats to take care of and more personalities to cater to, which means she’ll need money and lots of it! To earn money she’ll have to enter her cats into pageants and back alley Cat Fights! You know typical cat lady stuff.

Not too mention at least one of her cats is likely going to get sick since they’re living in squalor and what not and Cat Fight money won’t likely be enough to afford Dr. Beanie’s insanely priced treatments. So she’ll have to freeze the poor kitty until she fulfils enough of Beanie’s missions to convince him to treat it with FUTURE SCIENCE!

Oh and the cat lady can also get arrested by friendly animal control officers if she fails to take care of the cats (like say letting them run away or contract feline aids)…which I’ll go ahead and guess is a game over?

So this simple game isn’t quite as simple as it was lead on to be. In fact I’d say it’s down right cat shit crazy but in an intriguing way. Having to take of and meet the individual needs of each cat could be a hectic bit of excitement and the mini-games and side missions could also be interesting depending on how well they’re executed.

I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it comes out later this year for PC, iOS, and Android and hopefully other platforms.

Sounds a bit like Tokyo Jungle but with a lot more depth, and strategic gameplay instead of survival. I'm intrigued.

This is great - A new idea is still a new idea, no matter how strange or how far it is from left field, I hope its not a "casual" real time game though, I like the option to speed time along if I want to keep playing.

Really? A cat-lady simulator? ...

Eh... I have some faith.
