Telltale has some high ambitions for the future

1/5/13 2:40pm

The folks over at Telltale Games are on top of the world right now, after winning several GOTYawards for it’s episodic take on The Walking Dead, the future is looking brighter than ever for the adventure game centric studio.

There’s certainly plenty of excitement buzzing around the net, as gamers speculate about which franchises Telltale could possibly give the point and click treatment to next.

Well, we still don’t have any answers, but Telltale’s CEO Dan Connors said in a recent interview with Red Bull U.K. that the studio is looking to adapt a major film or gaming franchise to continue building the momentum it received from The Walking Dead.

“Coming from LucasArts, we always felt we could do a great Star Wars story game. We also love the idea of building out a deeper story to a great game franchise — something like Half Life Stories or Halo Stories.”

Senior vice president of publishing Steve Allison echoed this sentiment in a statement sent to GamesBeat’s Jeffrey Grubb. However, it should be said that while Allison confirmed the studios desire to adapt a major franchise, he said (in an effort to prevent inaccurate rumors from spreading) a Halo, Half-Life, or Star Wars (as cool as they would be) Telltale game will probably never happen.

“[Dan Connors was] speaking more to our goal of wanting to take on a major gaming franchise someday. [We want] to build a narrative game series that supports another franchise — as we passionately believe [our game] would not compete with or cannibalize [Halo 4 or the next Half-Life.]

“Will we do this? Yes, we believe we will some time very soon. But the franchises mentioned are totally speculative and used only as an example to frame the idea.”

What big franchises would you like to see adapted into a Telltale game g1s? I’m not sure myself. I haven’t really thought about it all that much. I’m too busy eagerly waiting for The Walking Dead Season 2 details.

Perhaps I’ll get back to you on that. Hmmmm.

Yeah, sure. They could make another interactive story where the "game" has limited choice options and holds your hand all the way through to the end. All glory to the story in TWD, but the game play is atrocious and it's not much in the way of actual play. Give the license to someone who knows what they're doing so that we can get something else than just an interactive cartoon where you point and click a couple of times between cinematics. Telltale's good at cashing in on franchise hype but not so good at actually making games. Anyone remember LJN? Telltale is the LJN of this generation.

While they're doing well with the comic thing, I would love to see a Y: The Last Man game, or Sandman. Hell, maybe even a Marvel noir game!

Know who would be perfect for a point and click game? Tintin.

I approve of this

There was also a fan made Han Solo point and click game, using the SCUMM engine and everything being worked on a couple years ago. I'm not entirely sure if it got finished but it would be cool to see TellTale do something like that.

I certainly wouldn't mind them being story doctors for other genres... but please keep the dream of adventure games alive...

Meh, like I've said in the past while the Walking Dead seems to be really good I was still very dissapointed with Back to the Future and Jurrassic Park, so I am not exactly for this. Also seeing their sucsess with the Walking Dead it would also be nice to see them increase the budget on their games.

I'd kinda like to see Telltale do a game based on the Shotime series Dexter. You'd have to compile evidence, stalk and kill your victim all while maintaining your cover as a normal person. Each episode would have a new "Bad guy" to kill as well as story elements for a Big Bad to deal with in the final episode.

But they'd have to get the voice actors from the show.

A point and click Star Wars game? Now that's just silly.
