Today's Takeaway - 10/13

I cannot figure out whether or not my excitement is stemming from the movie motif, Pop Cap name or even the cute little dragons, but Pop Cap's new Popcorn Dragon had me sold after the first screenshot. Me someone who stays away from Facebook games and casual games in general, I always play a lot of Pop Cap games. While Peggle is still my favorite, I also enjoy Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, and Bookworm.

So, is it messed up that I wouldn't normally touch a Zynga game based on principle, but when Pop Cap puts up a screenshot, I am scrapping to find a way to pre-order it? Are there casual game companies that make games of equal quality to that of Pop Cap? On the other hand, am I just too blinded by nerdgasms to realize Pop Cap is no better than any other casual game developer? For better or worse. Let me know what you think in the comments and look at these adorable screenshots.

I used to hate pop cap and all casual game creators. Then plants vs. zombies happened. This made me try other casual games from other developers. I personally think that only pop cap makes decent casual games (excluding random free flash games like submachine, achievement unlocked, and others that happened after 2009 when I more or less stopped playing free flash games). Many casual game creators seem to be praying off the social networking possibilities in games that casual gamers are just discovering ("I can send a present to one of my friends inside the game! Isn't that amazing!?!?!" -Yep. It was amazing when they did it in EverQuest. In 1999.). I do appreciate that Pop Cap is at least trying to do something not only original, but can gain the interest of more hardcore gamers.

Yes there are definitely casual game companies that can equal and surpass Pop Cap's games, but Zynga is the polar opposite of that. With games devoid of creativity, objective, and any semblance of "fun" Zynga isn't even worth mentioning in the same sentence as Pop Cap.

Regarding the game itself, you're not the only one having a nerdgasm, Sean, so don't be embarrassed -- many of us know the feeling, and I'm one of 'em. :)

Actually, Nintendo and Pop Cap are the two best casual developers ever. Zynga doesn't make anything innovative: It's proven that a lot of their material is plagiarism.
