Tomb Raider developer explains why Lara isn't making a Wii U appearance

1/30/13 10:00am

As of now, Tomb Raider's revamp is slated for a March 5 release on all major consoles except Nintendo's Wii U, as Tomb Raider's creative director explains in a recent interview that the game's developers are trying to keep "roughly the same experience" on all three of the game's scheduled platforms.

In the interview between Crystal Dynamics' Noah Huges and True Gaming, Huges explained that while he loves Nintendo's innovation with the Wii U, Crystal Dynamics would have to tweak the game too much in order to accommodate  the Wii U's many features.

"I'm always a fan of Nintendo's systems, that in particular they really push interface design. And from a game design perspective it's fun to play with new interfaces."

Huges continued on saying...

"Having said that, it's something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it, and currently we're offering it on PlayStation 3, Xbox and PC. All three of those are really trying to deliver roughly the same experience but delivered best on each platform, and I think something like the Wii U often asks you to do something unique based on a unique interface. So that's something as a gamer I love, but it's something you don't want to do half-heartedly as a developer."

Personally, I think that the Wii U could offer some handy additions to Tomb Raider's gameplay, such as being able to use the GamePad's screen as a map or to manage inventory with. So hopefully, Square and Crystal Dynamics haven't counted Nintendo's latest console out just yet, though it looks almost certain that Tomb Raider won't be making a Wii U appearance.

What are your thoughts g1s? Would you rather play Tomb Raider with a standard controller in your hand? Or do you think the Wii U would bring some welcomed additions to the table? Let me know in the comment section down below!

It probably would take too long to port it onto a console with that controller. Shame too since the WiiU needs it right about now.

If I had a Wii U I think I'd rather play it on that(as long as there's no stupid flat out gimmicks tossed in). I think the game pad cud(as with most things) add som pretty cool features. I totally see ehy they don't do it tho.

Even with the GamePad, what about the Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii Classic Controller Pro?

Probably budget issues. No problem though. Nintendo seems to have an impressive line-up coming so this game not being on the Wii U will not be a disappointment for most Wii U fanatics I assume.

I can:t tell if the developers are just lazy, or they just don't have the money...maybe its both. I didn't have alot of interest in this game to begin with, I wasn't planing to get on my PS3 and I doubt I would have gotten it on Wii U

Developers feel like they HAVE to use the touch screen yet a game like Assassin's Creed 3 barely uses it at all

Seriously? They couldn't just put the inventory and other menus on the controller and leave it at that? Nintendo designed the Wii U to be flexible so they could make the games just like any other system.

Not if they where already close to over budget since adding anything no matter how small or trivial it seems requires time and money developers just may not be willing to spend especially if what there working one is already close to completion/

It''s getting way too easy to bash the WiiU everyday there is a new story. As much as I pity anyone who bought this system, shooting fish in a barrel gets old after awhile. It's like trolling on super easy mode with a golden tanooki leaf...What happened to you Nintendo? Oh well at least Nintendo fans still have their Peter Pan games.

How exactly is this Nintendo's fault? A publisher decided not to put it onto a particular system so they didn't. That's completely out of Nintendo's hands at that point. Hell, they could of just ported the game to Wii U and not have any touch screen support for the game if they wanted to but as Huges said, they didn't want to do it cause they would of wanted to tailor the experience to the Wii U. With Tomb Raider coming out so soon, they would of had to move people onto making the Wii U version of the game instead of keeping them on polishing the game.
