Top 10 Games I Neglected
Woodyman counts down his Top 10 video games that he's neglected.
Editor's Note: I think we can all relate with Woodyman on this one. I personally have copies of Morrowind, Final Fantasy III, and Splinter Cell that are just collecting dust.
Welcome g1s, to my first list in a long ass time. I’m sorry I’ve been away so long but it feels good to be back. As I’m sure you all know, I’m Woodyman and this is…
Top 10 Games I Neglected
Now I’m sure you’re asking, ‘Woodyman, what does games you neglected mean?’ Well random Internet viewer, I’ll tell you. By games I neglected I mean games that I own and really want to play, but never got around to. It could be because the games are too hard, too long, or some other reason.
Yup, that’s right! I’m gonna list 10 games that I own and have barely played.
That way you can yell at me in the comments section, about OMG YOU NEED TO PLAY ________!
Please keep in mind that since I never really played much of these games, my knowledge of the gameplay, characters, and plot will be limited. Mainly for each entry I’ll stick with a brief description of the game or series and why I haven’t played it.
All entries in this list are in order of how much I wanna play and complete each game, so without further ado let’s begin.
As how it is with all my lists, here’s some music to listen to while you read.
The Black Keys – Gold on the Ceiling
Tenacious D – Rock is Dead
The Darkness – Everybody Have a Good Time
Alright, enough jibber jabber… let’s begin.
This is one that I want to play, but I’m not beating myself for not playing it.
At the end of the Playstation 2’s lifecycle I began visiting my local vidya game store and quickly began purchasing a bunch of well known PS2 series that I missed out on when they first came out. It was at this time that I got into Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter. While on one of my excursions I saw a little game by the name of Devil May Cry 3. I heard a lot of good things, bad things, and frustrating things about the Devil May Cry series. The extent of my knowledge of these games is that my roommate in college played DMC 4 all the time and it looked like fun. It reminded me a lot of God of War. Also I know there’s some issue with jeans and the second game in the series.
The main reason I haven’t played this game yet is twofold. The first reason is that, I don’t own the first, second, or fourth game. I hate playing a video game series when I don’t own every game in the series. I can’t start in the middle, it’s just not possible for me. The second reason is the difficulty. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pretty skilled at video games, but nowhere near the skill level of many of you. As I claimed in some other blog, I usually always pick “Easy” when selecting my difficulty. For me if a game is too difficult, then it’s not fun. I played DMC 3 when I first bought it, died, and then never touched it again. I heard so much about this series, that I wanna play it but not until I get the rest and man up!
I can hear Darkseid yelling at me now.
I have barely played Odin Sphere, and I honestly feel bad.
If you don’t already know, Odin Sphere is a 2D Fantasy/Action RPG on the Playstation 2. What is it about? In all honesty, I’m not too sure. The plot is divided into 5 main character driven chapters or books and I’m only on the first one, and I don’t like to do research for my lists so as far as I know, the game is about a Valkyrie princess who gets caught up in her father’s evil quest for power. I’m sure there’s more, in fact I know there’s more… but I don’t want to ruin the story by doing research until I play it more.
So this seems like fun, why have I neglected the game? Well before you grab your pitchforks and torches let me explain. One thing you’re gonna hear me say a bunch of times on this list is that I don’t have the time. Which is true…
I love RPGs but to get fully immersed in one you have to dedicate a lot of time to getting invested in the story, by understanding and utilizing all of the different RPG elements, and dedicate the time to grind if necessary. The grinding is where I failed in Odin Sphere. Instead of taking my time with the game I rushed through and used cheap tactics and strategy in fights, especially boss fights. Now I’m up to a boss in the game who I can’t beat because I am WAY below the recommended level. I die in 2 or 3 hits. The only solution is to replay older levels and level-up but honestly I get bored from grinding. Once I grinded for at least an hour or two and still couldn’t beat the boss, I gave up.
I wanna play again, but I just feel like at the time, I had TOO MUCH Odin Sphere. Therefore, I’m hoping that a break is all I need for the game to feel fun and fresh again.
Beyond Good and Evil is a fantastic game, and when I played it I was addicted and got really far in it…
If you don’t know, Beyond Good and Evil is an amazing Action Adventure game where you play as investigative photographer, Jade as she travels around kicking ass, solving puzzles, and revealing a conspiracy. DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!
It’s a great game, and if you haven’t played it I recommend it. You can get an HD version on X-Box 360 and PS3 but the original came out for X-Box, PS2, Gamecube, and PC.
If it’s so good, why haven’t I finished it?
One word… FRUSTRATION!
As I said above I was pretty far in this game, nowhere near the finale, or unveiling the conspiracy but I still was far and was having a lot of fun. Now, I bought this game from the Salvation Army for about 3 bucks a few years ago. Coincidentally it’s one of the few games I actually own on PC. I don’t know why but for some reason I feel better with a controller in my hand then a keyboard and mouse. Nevertheless I couldn’t pass up the great deal. So I bought the game, played it, loved it, then my computer got a bad virus and got damaged beyond repair so I had to get a new one…
So all my progress was lost. Needless to say, I was upset. Ever since then I’ve had an apprehension to PC games, and haven’t played it since. I just don’t want to put in the effort.
My god, this list is making me sound lazy or a non-gamer. I do play games, just never really got around to these ten.
There’s no way to sugar coat this one. I neglected Final Fantasy X because I rage quit. That’s the only way to describe it. I’m a rage quitting baby.
I’m going to admit it right now that while I love RPGs, I don’t have the time for them… seriously I don’t. I’ve only beaten a handful of RPGs in my life, and the ONLY Final Fantasy I beat was the first one on the original Nintendo. I kicked Chaos’ ass! I bought Final Fantasy X around the same time I bought DMC 3. My roommate at the time and myself played this game all the time, until the semester ended. He was really into Final Fantasy, and I had fun playing it too, even though it seemed very cheesy and overdramatic for my own tastes.
So we played it, and on the last day of our lease we got up to the first fight with Seymour… and died…and died… and died again. It was at that point I gave up. It’s been more than two years, and the funny thing is my roommate came up to visit recently we popped in Final Fantasy X and beat Seymour the first try. Only problem was… I COULDN’T REMEMBER ANYTHING ABOUT THE GAME. Who’s Seymour, why is there a blue kitty in my party, what’s going on!?!? So after beating Seymour I turned the game off and deleted my file. If I’m gonna play Final Fantasy X, I’m doing it from start to finish… because in my opinion there’s no point to playing an RPG if you can’t get invested in the story.
Funny story… I actually never played or beaten Chrono Trigger.
It’s on my list of games I don’t own, but REALLY want…
Nevertheless I own Chrono Cross and the sad story is… I just gave up on it.
There’s no reason, there’s no excuse. I got about 8 hours in and just gave up…
I had a lot of fun with the game, and gave up because my memory card file got corrupted and akin to Final Fantasy X, I don’t remember anything about the story.
Ya know what, it’s too much work right now to go through a giant paragraph as to why I haven’t played Chrono Cross so lemme just list em.
- Don’t have time for an RPG
- File Save Corrupted
- Got lost and confused
That’s about it… moving on!
Alright it’s been a while since I wrote the last entry, so hopefully I’ll be a little fresher and able to write a bit more information as to why I neglected all these games.
Ahh… Silent Hill, another series I have never played. I don’t own any of the other games but I picked up Silent Hill 4 for cheap, and heard great things about it so I had to grab this game. All I really know about the series is that it’s a survival horror game, it’s very foggy, and there are pyramid heads and killer nurses running all about.
That is all I know, and it is also the reason why I neglected this game.
In short, I am a giant coward. I love horror films, horror TV shows, and horror literature but for some reason I cannot play horror video games. It took my roommate’s help and a lot of daylight just for me to beat Resident Evil 4, and according to fans RE4 isn’t even that scary.
I’ve tried twice to play Silent Hill 4 and have failed twice. The first time I tried, I didn’t even make it out of the room. The second time I tried, I made it out of the room but then I saw a ghost/spirit or something and shut the game off in fear. It’s pathetic, but true. I squeak louder than Shelby when I play horror game… yeah, it’s that bad.
One day I hope to man up and play this game, but I might need a diaper or an extra pair of britches before I do.
Oh god, I can see the comments now.
Yes Mega Man is one of my favorite series of all time. Yes I have beaten Mega Man 1-10 on numerous occasions. Yes, my username itself is derived from Mega Man. So how the Hell could I have neglected Mega Man X?
Well the answer is mainly, I didn’t grow up with the games. I grew up with Mega Man 1-6 on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. However, when the switch from 8-bit to 16-bit happened I went with SEGA instead of Nintendo. Now since then I’ve played Mega Man 7 and 8 but the only game in the X series that I’ve played is the first one originally released for the Super Nintendo, but haven’t played any of the other ones. I feel like the main reason for this is because I didn’t grow up with them. Since I didn’t grow up with the X series I suck at them. I’m not used to all of the changes that happened between the original series and the X series. Now Mega Man can dash, jump off walls, ride bigger robots, and learn Street Fighter moves? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY!?
Since I didn’t grow up with the games, I never played it in my youth and never got as good as I did in the original Mega Man games. I beat Mega Man X but barely. I’ve tried X2 but I just keep dying over and over again.
I really want to play the entire X series, especially because I have the collection on Playstation 2, but I’m just too tired from dying all the time. I need practice… and I need not to suck.
That’s right, that’s right…
I never beat Half-Life 2.
If you don’t already know, Half-Life 2 is a first-person shooter that revolutionized the genre. It’s widely acclaimed for its physics, graphics, gameplay, AI, sound, animation, and EVERYTHING. It’s a great game and a great series.
If you’re a gamer, you know how big an impact the Half-Life series had on gamers. Whenever Valve does anything, or announces anything all fans are clamouring in the comments and message boards for Valve to make Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or something. Every gamer wants it, and they all say “Valve, make it.”
The main reason I haven’t played this is the same reason I haven’t played Silent Hill 4… this game scared me! God, I sound like such a crybaby right now. I have The Orange Box on X-Box 360… Shaddup PC gamers, I know it’s better on your console and everything but my computer can’t handle that. Hell, it can barely handle Minecraft. So I’m in the beginning of Half-Life 2, I made it past the creepy ceiling tentacle monsters and killed a few headcrab zombies. Then I was walking through this fenced in area and all of a sudden a thousand headcrabs rained down from the sky. I tried to run through them but that didn’t work so I panicked and died. I haven’t played it since because I’m dreading going through that again. I’m also dreading a section of the game many of you know about… Ravenholm.
Okay! I swear that this is the last RPG on the list.
Mainly because this is the second to last entry on the list.
As I think I think I claimed earlier, I have never completed a single Final Fantasy game besides the very first game on the NES. I just have a lot of trouble getting into them and devoting the time to play them. I remember I had a great time with Final Fantasy, Dark Cloud, and The Legend of Dragoon but now that I’m grown up I just don’t feel like I have the time.
However, I really want to play Final Fantasy IX because I really want to recapture the awe and amazing times I had when I was a child. I heard that Final Fantasy IX was the personal favorite of the series creator and had a simple story similar to the original.
So why haven’t I played it yet?
Well… it’s next on my queue, but right now I’m playing Metroid Prime 2. I am a horrible multi-tasker so I hafta finish Prime 2 first. Once I’m done with that, I’m gonna run a train on Final Fantasy IX!
You heard me.
I honestly have no excuse for this one at all but I guess I’ll try to explain myself.
I love Double Fine and Tim Schafer.
I LOVE Double Fine and Tim Schafer.
I LOVE DOUBLE FINE AND TIM SCHAFER.
I FUCKING LOVE DOUBLE FINE AND TIM SCHAFER!!!
I recently beat Brutal Legend and was amazed by the atmosphere, dialogue, and overall feeling of the game. Ever since then I’ve played a few Double Fine games and have always been amazed and shocked by the creativity this team has. What they lack in gameplay, they up for with creative storytelling and atmosphere.
One Double Fine game I heard a lot about and always wanted to play was Psychonauts. I heard a lot of praise about this game but what sold me, was Little Miss Gamer’s review of the game. Seeing her passion and devotion to this game, got me interested. Well I got myself a Steam account and bought the game… and then like 2 days later it was on sale as part of an Indie Bundle but that’s besides the point.
So why haven’t I played it yet, well this is gonna sound stupid but I forgot I bought the game. I was writing this list and only had 9 entries when I suddenly realized I HAVE PSYCHONAUTS! So besides that, there’s nothing holding me back and I may have neglected it in the past, but I’m gonna spend some quality time with that game right now!
So feel free to comment below by yelling at me to play these games.
Or comment on what games you neglected.
and of course...
