Woodyman counts down the top 10 video games he wants made into movies.

Editor's Note: Personally, I'd love to see an American Ace Attorney movie get made with Edgar Wright as the director.

Top 10 Games I Want Made Into Movies

Hey g1s and gamers alike,

I’m Woodyman and I'm back with another list. This time I’m counting down the…

Top 10 Games I Want to be Made into Movies!

I’m not gonna type a long introduction here and bore you, but I do want to get one point across. This list is going to be tough to write. One of the most difficult things to do in a creative medium is to have one form of media based on another. That’s why there are so many shitty games based on movies… so many shitty movies based on book/games. It’s hard to do a series justice when it already has stories/plots/characters/and especially fans.

So without further ado here is some music to listen to while you read.

Hall and Oates - Private Eyes

Somebody That I Used To Know - Your Favorite Martian

The Limousines - Internet Killed The Video Star

And here is my list!

WARNING: Some games listed here may already have movies based on them. If that’s the case then I feel like the movie was bad, or didn’t live up to the game.

10.) Darkwatch

The Game:

If you’ve seen my list of the Top 10 Horses in video games then you know that I love Darkwatch. If you don’t already know, Darkwatch is a Playstation 2 game made by Capcom. It’s a first person shooter (FPS) with vampires and demons. You play as a man named Jericho who was bitten by an evil vampire. Now he’s on a quest to kick some ass. Well actually the story’s a bit more complicated than that. Actually in the game you take control of Jericho Cross. Jericho is a wild-west cowboy, and a half-vampire. He is on a quest with the rest of the Darkwatch, a vampire hunting guild, to take down a baddie named Lazarus.
This is one of my favorite Playstation 2 games that I own. The fact that you can choose for Jericho to be good or evil and that there are different ending makes this one of the most in depth FPS games I have ever played. It’s pew pew fun, but the story is what brings me in… everytime.

The Movie:

I want Darkwatch to be made into a movie for two reasons. The first reason is just a big “eff you!” to Twilight and all those sissy vampires. I hate to sound like an old man here, but back in my day vampires were scary and they need to be again! I miss the days of The Lost Boys, Dracula, and Salem’s Lot. The second reason is that the story in Darkwatch is really interesting. I don’t want to give too much away, but there are just so many things in this story to keep an audience interested. First off, it’s a tale of revenge as Jericho wants to kill Lazarus. Secondly, Jericho struggles between his human side and his vampire side so there’s the brooding hero. There’s a sexy Native American/Vampire girl named Tala who was once featured in Playboy. Finally, there is betrayal and a twist! How can this movie fail?

9.) Ghost Trick

The Game:

My god, it’s been so long since I talked about this game. It’s also been a long time since I played it. If you don’t remember, I talked about this game on my Top 10 Ghosts in Video Games list I did all the way in October. As I said back then, I never completed this game and I still haven’t, but that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about it! Sissel had amnesia, but he is also a ghost! The game begins with Sissel already dead. His corpse lies between a mysterious man with a gun, and a woman. Despite his amnesia, Sissel deduces that the stylish corpse is actually his body. A mysterious voice that introduces himself as a ghost named Ray tells Sissel that his memories will begin to return if he saves the woman held up by gunpoint. He can save her using Ghost Trick, which is the ability to possess and manipulate objects and the ability to rewind time 4 minute before a person’s death. After he saves the girl, they team up to save more people and discover the truth. Such a fantastic game, the atmosphere is great and Sissel himself is a really interesting character.

The Movie:

I feel if Ghost Trick was made into a movie then it’d be in a genre not often seen in Hollywood. First off I’d definitely want it to be live-action. Second off it’d be a murder-mystery comedy… That’s right you read that correctly! I want Ghost Trick the movie to be a comedy and murder mystery wrapped up into one tight package. The only other movie I can really compare this to would be when they made the movie Clue. The reasoning for this is that Sissel is such an entertaining and funny character that it’d be impossible for a serious murder mystery to be made. With an entertaining story, a great gimmick, and the mystery of who killed Sissel, this is a movie that need to be made.

8.) Shadow of the Colossus

The Game:

Another game that I already talked about in my Top 10 Horses list, I think I’m starting to see a pattern here. Well let me provide a brief synopsis of this AMAZING game for any of y’all who are unfamiliar. In this game, the main character, Wander, is on a quest to revive his dead girlfriend, Mono. Wander takes orders from a scary voice in the sky, that claims he must defeat all the colossi in order to revive Mono. So Wander goes out in search of these magnificent giants, while riding Agro.

After defeating all of the colossi it turns out that Wander has freed the scary voice in the sky who then possesses Wander’s body. The two are defeated by some knights, but in the end Mono is revived and Wander is reborn as a child. Also Agro is there too.

The Movie:

In all honesty, this is going to sound really weird but THE ONLY WAY I can see this movie made would be if it’s made by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli (the guys who made Ponyo, Spirited Away, The Secret World of Arrietty and more!) Studio Ghibli is known for focusing on atmosphere and visuals in there movies and I think that style would shine in a Shadow of Colossus movie. Some of you naysayers might think that there’s not enough source material for a Shadow of Colossus movie, but I disagree. The beginning of the film would focus on Mono and Wander’s relationship on home, then her tragic death, then Wander’s sadness and desperation, then him hearing a rumor about a way to revive her, then continue on with the plot of the game, show Wander struggling against the first colossus but getting progressively better, then end with the ending of the game, but for the sake of the audience PLEASE explain things a little better than the game did. The first time I beat Shadow of the Colossus I had no idea what the Hell happened.

7.) Spyro the Dragon

The Game:

I’m talking about the very first Spyro the Dragon game here. In the land of Spyro the Dragon there are five different types of dragons who live together in peace. There are Artisans, Peace Keepers, Magic Crafters, Beast Makers and Dream Weavers. The dragons live in peace and harmony until one fateful day. During an interview with a reporter, one dragon says that the evil villain Gnasty Gnorc is “not a threat” and “ugly”. After hearing this report, Gnasty Gnorc gets pissed off and imprisons all of Dragons in crystal and it’s up to Spyro and his friend Sparx the Dragonfly to save the day.

The second game takes place in a land known as Avalar. In Avalar, The Professor, Hunter, and Elora are all together working on the Professor’s new invention, a portal. The dimwitted Hunter puts in his birthday as the coordinates for the portal and accidentally transports a small wizard named Ripto to the land of Avalar. Once Ripto realizes that there are no dragons in Avalar, he decided to take it over. Ripto uses his magic to take over the land and palaces but The Professor has a plan. In a last minute plan, he uses a portal to “capture” a dragon and have the dragon scare off Ripto. Unfortunately, the dragon they capture is Spyro who offers to help defeat Ripto and free Avalar.

The third game takes place in the land of dragons. Spyro and his crew are celebrating “The Year of the Dragon” in which new baby dragon eggs are brought to the land. During the celebration an evil sorceress steals all the baby dragon eggs and is planning on using the baby dragon wings for a potion that will give her immortality. Once again it’s up to Spyro to save the day, save the dragon eggs, and kick some sorceress butt.

There’s more Spyro games, but those ones suck.

The Movie:

Well now that you know WAY too much about Spyro the Dragon I bet you wanna know which game they should make a movie off of. Well in short, ALL OF THEM. One thing that the original Spyro the Dragon series had was interesting villains. Sure their motives were pretty simple but these enemies always seemed threatening and entertaining. So for the plot of the Spyro movie, why don’t all these villains team up to take down Spyro. They recapture the dragons, kidnap the babies, imprison all of Spyro’s friends and then just beat the living shit out of him. This movie would have to be some 3D animation like Pixar or something… maybe even 3D like How to Train Your Dragon. That was amazing! The Spyro games suck, but a 3D movie starring the three antagonists from the original series would capture the eyes of fans, and the hearts of gamers.

6.) Prototype

The Game:

Prototype is an open-world sand-box game and is actually the first game I bought when I got my XBox 360. In the game, you play as Alex Mercer… kinda. Mercer is a man who one day wakes up with amnesia and a whole mess of powers. He can run fast, run up walls, glide, transform into any person he "consumes", and finally and most importantly he can shape his body parts into various weapons (whips, claws, blades, hammers... etc.) Eventually, later on in the game he gets super powered moves, and a whole body armor.

Throughout the game, Mercer tries to uncover who he is? What happened to him? Where did he get these amazing powers? And How can he stop New York City from being destroyed? As the game progresses you find out that Alex Mercer is dead and that you are actually controlling a strand of the very same virus that’s destroying the city that consumed and thus became Alex Mercer. And who is Alex Mercer, well he’s basically a terrorist who released the virus on NYC in the first place.

The Movie:

We’ve seen superhero movies before, and we’ve seen plenty of movies with a reluctant super-villain Megamind, Dr. Horrible, Despicable Me… but Prototype is the first instance in which I saw a villain, who thought he was a good guy and a hero the entire time, but then found out later that he royally screwed up. I know I’m in the minority here, but I’m getting a little tired of so many Superhero movies coming out. Now I’m sure you’re wondering if I’m so sick of superhero movies then why the Hell do I want a Prototype movie? Well basically, I’m tired of superhero movies because they’re all the same. It’s a different superhero each time but it’s basically this… there’s a bad guy, kick his ass, yay we win, we saved the world… the end. I feel if a Prototype movie was made then it would shake up the foundation of Superhero movies with its dark tone, amnesiac super-villain, and with the fact that there is no true happy ending. Prototype is the movie that’ll give Hollywood a kick in the pants, so that hopefully they’ll be more creative.

5.) Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

The Game:

Funny fact… I have never played the original Red Dead Redemption. All I know about Red Dead Redemption is that you shoot stuff. Also what I know about the series is that it’s basically Grand Theft Auto in the Wild West with cowboys. However for this list I’m not talking about the main game. I’m talking about the downloadable add-on Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. The plot of the DLC add-on is that a plague has swept across the land of Red Dead Redemption. The dead have risen from there graves and have started to bite people. Our protagonist, John Marston is back once again. This time, his goal is to scour the country, find whatever caused this outbreak and then find an antidote. Why does Marston want an antidote? Well his wife and son were bitten by zombies and thus became the undead themselves.

The Movie:

This is going to sound like a total cop-out but I honestly do not want a Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare to be anywhere near the source material. I could care less if a movie was made that directly follows the plot of the game. I could also care less if the movie carried on from the “twist ending” shown at the end of the Undead Nightmare DLC. Call it a different name for all I care! But what I really want is a zombie movie set in the Wild West… make it!

I mean come on! The zombie craze in movies is dying while the vampire craze keeps going on and on! I personally can’t think of one form of media that marriages zombies and the wild west besides Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and that seriously has to change.

4.) No More Heroes

The Game:

No More Heroes is one of my favorite titles on the Wii. It’s one of the few games on the system overloaded with blood and gore, and I just can’t get enough. If you never played the game, the plot is very simple. You play as Travis Touchdown. Travis is an otaku who is addicted to video games and wrestling. He wins an internet auction and ends up with an awesome Beam Katana (similar to the Star Wars Lightsaber). After the auction, he realizes that he is out of money and thus drowns his sorrows at the local bar. Later he is approached by a mysterious woman named Sylvia who offers him large sums of cash. All Travis has to do is kill an assassin. Travis does this and becomes the #10 ranked assassin in the world. Now he’s stuck. If Travis stops killing then he’ll be constantly attacked by others who wish to break the Top 10 assassins. Therefore, Travis begins his quest to become the number 1 ranked assassin so that he can be rich, and because Sylvia promised she’d sleep with him is he made it to number 1. Unless you suck at this game, Travis makes it to the #1 spot and then there’s about 5 or 6 twists in the plot that I just can’t give away. Needless to say, it’s a heart pumping ending.

The Movie:

I believe that if No More Heroes was to be made into a movie, it would be amazing. The biggest pitfall the director of the movie could make would be if they took the plot too seriously. No More Heroes is a game where an otaku kills people for money and sex, and that’s exactly how it should stay. I imagine a No More Heroes movie to be in the complete over the top style of Scott Pilgrim vs The World combined with the over the top style of Kill Bill. Basically what I’m saying is that I want this game to be over the top. The movie should go back to the events of Travis’ life before he became an assassin, and especially his family life. If we learn more about Travis’ life and personality, we’d care more about the twists in the plot. Besides that, all I want to see is over the top blood and violence.

3.) Portal

The Game:

Have I ever mentioned that Portal is one of my favorite games of all time? Well it is. If you thought the plot to No More Heroes was simple then you’ll be shocked by the plot of Portal. You play as a young woman named Chell. Chell is a test subject in Aperture Science Enrichment Center. She must make her way through various testing chambers using a Portal Gun. The portal gun can create two distinct portal ends, orange and blue. The portals create a visual and physical connection between two different locations in three-dimensional space. Neither end is specifically an entrance or exit; all objects that travel through one portal will exit through the other. Chell is coerced through the testing chambers by a AI robotic device known as GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System) with the promise of cake. The testing seems fine until GLaDOS begins to act odd, and even tries to kill Chell. Chell escapes the test chambers and goes on a mission to “turn off” GLaDOS.

The Movie:

Now I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of hate for this, but I’ve never played Portal 2. I have no excuse, I just haven’t purchased it. So I may bring some up things that were already addressed in the second game. When I say I want a Portal movie, I gotta admit I don’t want to see a movie version of Portal 1 or Portal 2. Instead I wanna see what happened before the events of Portal 1. Why is Aperture Science Enrichment Center empty? Why did GLaDOS go apeshit crazy? Who were some of the test subjects before Chell? If a Portal movie was made, and it addressed some of the lingering questions of the games… well I figured it’d be pretty awesome. It can’t be any worse than that Bloodrayne movie.

2.) TimeSplitters 2

The Game:

You know this game was gonna make an appearance sometime… Why? Because TimeSplitters is probably my favorite video game series of all time and it always seems to make an appearance on my lists. I’m actually getting a little sick talking about this game so much, but whatever… If you don’t know, TimeSplitters is an FPS game. TimeSplitters 2 starts off in the year 2401 in the midst of a war between humanity and the TimeSplitters, an alien race bent on the destruction of mankind. However, rather than use brute force to destroy humanity, they are using the special objects called time crystals to travel through time changing the course of history, bringing Earth to ruin. Two space marines from Earth, Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart, are sent out to a space station overrun by TimeSplitters to retrieve the time crystals. eSplitters, an alien race bent on the destruction of mankind. Therefore, Cortez goes to different time periods and fights different creatures in order to retrieve the Time Chrystals.

The Movie:

This might be the first time and only time I say this, but I want the TimeSplitters movie to follow the plot of TimeSplitters 2 exactly. However, I want the humor and “characters” of the third TimeSplitters game. I always thought that the second TimeSplitters game had the best gameplay, but the third had the best dialogue and humor, if the two were combined, I’d be in nerd heaven. If TimeSplitters would be made into a movie I’d want it to be completely live-action with minimal CGI (mainly for any creatures that cannot be done with normal film conventions). If this movie was made it’d be the rare Sci-Fi comedy, similar to Space Balls and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Except TimeSplitters the movie would be a Sci-Fi comedy with guns, zombies, monkeys, aliens, and time travel! I feel like the only problem for a TimeSplitters movie would be the casting. As I described above, the characters are one of the best aspects of the TimeSplitters series. Fans love Sgt. Cortez, Corporal Hart, Harry Tipper, Ash Williams and all the rest of the cast. We love these characters so much, that we can’t imagine them in real life. However, with the right script and plot I feel like a TimeSplitters movie could be a hilarious cult classic.

1.) Conker’s Bad Fur Day

The Game:

I have never owned a Nintendo 64, but even I know Conker’s Bad Fur Day is one of the best games on the system. Conker’s Bad Fur Day is about an alcoholic red-squirrel who’s on a quest to get home to his girlfriend, Berri. The only problem is, Conker is hungover from a night of binge-drinking with his friends… well actually Conker has another problem. The king, a giant panther, has a wobbly table and the only way to fix it is to use a red-squirrel to prop up the table. So on Conker’s quest home and for cash, he is being pursued by the King. In the game Conker gets in all sorts of odd situations such as fighting Nazi teddy bears, a vampire squirrel, and even robbing a bank. He eventually gets trapped by the King and has to fight his way out. In an ending that breaks the 4th wall, Conker becomes King, Berri is a corpse, and the game ends on a very depressing note.

The Movie:

If you’re a fan of this game then I’m sure you know it ends with Conker being crowned king. However he is depressed his girlfriend is dead so he goes out to drink. Then in a scene very similar to the intro, Conker is seen stumbling out of the bar, but this time he heads in the opposite direction… and then the game ends! Now I know I’m not the only gamer out there who wondered “What happens next!?” Does Conker continue to be king? Does he go on another quest fueled by drunken shenanigans? Does Berri come back? What about the alien? Or the doctor? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!? That if why, is a Conker’s Bad Fur Day movie was made, it’d hafta be a sequel. There are so many questions unanswered, and so many more opportunities to reference movies and break the fourth wall.

One thing to remember about Conker’s Bad Fur Day is that it was originally gonna be another cute and cuddley Rare game, but that idea was eventually scrapped and instead the game turned into the drunken adventures of a foul-mouthed squirrel on a quest to get some sexy squirrel ass and a load of cash.

With this in mind there’s only one company that can make this movie… and that is Pixar! Can you imagine the same company that made Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Monster’s Inc. use their amazing technology to make a movie about a squirrel. Except that this Pixar movie would be rated R and feature boobs, blood, and a lot of profanity. I love Pixar and their visual style, but feel like they are similar to Rare in the olden days of the N64… everything they do is too cute! Luckily, if they tackle the Conker’s Bad Fur Day movie, they’ll move into more adult themes and make the best video game movie of all time.

Well gamers, that’s the end of my list of top 10 games I want to be made into movies.

I hoped you enjoyed it. Feel free to leave a positive or negative comment below and also comment on what video games you’d like to see made into a movie.
