Top 10 Multiplayer Games for Portables

2/14/13 3:32pm
tl;dr

Screwattack made the Top 10 Multiplayer Games for Consoles, Local and Online; and the Top 10 Multiplayer Games for PC.

But what about the portables?

There are some really good games to play with friends on every place, locally and online.

So I'm counting down the best multiplayer games to play on your room, and even in your bathroom.

Handhelds and Mobile games are allowed, and there are only two rules on this list.

1-Only one game for franchise

2-Ports are not allowed on this list, just games released only for portables and not that there were ported from the home consoles. So if you were hoping for Street Fighter IV on 3DS on this list, sorry.

10.
I start the list with a game released only for iPad.
Most of the multiplayer iPad games are board games, and then there´s Multiponk
Or it´s Multipong, or Multibong. Who cares?
Multiponk

This is one of the best iPad games to bring 4 persons for fun. (No pun intended)
It has powerups, and different obstacles that make this game the best 4 player iPad game that's not a board game.
Other multiplayer iPad games at the same time are just for 2, but this one has the party wherever you are.
9.
Who wanted to play an FPS on the Playstation Portable?
That´s right, nobody.
With tons of mediocre FPS games on the PSP, Medal of Honor Heroes was the first FPS game done right.
Medal of Honor: Heroes

The question is: How could EA managed to translate FPS controllers on the PSP?
We know that the most notable PSP problem on the controller was the lack of a 2nd joystick, and most of the shooters on the PSP used an auto-lock that ruined most of the experience on these games.
But not on Medal of Honor. They used the face buttons as an alternative for the 2nd joystick.
It was a weird programming, but it was useful back then.
And of course the multiplayer made everything better.
It was up to 32 players online, 32 PLAYERS ON A HANDHELD!!!!
Basically the online multiplayer of Medal of Honor Heroes, and the controller programming, were the reason for FPS lovers to buy a PSP.
The only drawback: THOSE FREAKING CHEATERS!!!!

8.

Speaking about portable FPS, if you had an iPhone, iPad or any Android console, be sure to check out Modern Combat 3.
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nations

It's the closest thing to a real Call of Duty game for a mobile. (other than be just a zombie survival)
Maybe some of you are asking me, why the previous one instead of the recent one?
Well, basically both have an awesome multiplayer, but the third one has the best maps, and also has a much better customization.
And the special weapons that you can use like the satellite or the air strike like in Modern Warfare.
This game could be another Gameloft rip off, but this rip off it's much better than all the portable Call of Duty games.
7.
Advance Wars was one of the best launch games that made people to buy a Game Boy Advance, outside of Mario.
Advance Wars

This turn based strategy game was even so popular with the multiplayer.
Unlike any other Game Boy game that you need a link cable for two or more players.
This one you can play with other 4 friends on a single GBA.
You don't need a cable link, just a GBA and this game.
It had 3 sequels, and I'm hoping to make a comeback for the 3DS.
Please do it, Intelligent Systems!
6.
The number 6 on the list goes for the only imported game that it's on the list.
As an alternative for a Super Smash Bros game on the go, Jump Super Stars was like Smash, but with characters from the Shonen Jump series.
But the best is yet to come!
Jump Ultimate Stars

Both games were never released outside of Japan due to licensing issues.
But who cares, because this game has all the characters from popular animes like Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Saint Seiya, and much more.
Unlike Super Smash Bros, the objective on this game is to defeat the oponents, by not throw them out of the arena, just by knocking them out.
Also you can create your own panel that it's the alternative to the character selection, where you can put strips that can be characters, backup and even strength points to your character.
It also has online play, that was the main reason of why it's on the list.
The good thing it's that the DS is region free so you can import this game and play it, just be sure to understand japanese.
5.
I love car combat games, especially if the gold is to eliminate the competitors.
The PSP had a good launch games and one of them had the best online multiplayer back then.
Twisted Metal: Head On

Twisted Metal Head On was, probably, one of the best launch titles with online multiplayer for the PSP.
It has awesome maps, even the Paris stage from Twisted Metal 2; and all the iconic characters.
It was addictive when it came out, but saddly Sony decided to pull the plug on this game later.
That sucks because I wanted to keep playing this game, even years after it's release.
Anyway, Twisted Metal will always have the addictive multiplayer,  and I hope that Sony will make a new title for the PSVita. Probably it will make the system sales go high.
4.
The last PSP game that it's on the list.
Most of the fighting games on portables were basically ports, and as I said before, no ports on this list.
The only good portable fighter that's not a port it's basically Dissidia Final Fantasy
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

After the smash hit of Dissidia Final Fantasy, its Dissidia 012 what made everything better.
In the original you only play as the protagonists and the antagonists.
In this one, you can also play as the secondary characters like Yuna, Tifa; and also Shantotto from Final Fantasy XI.
The addictive combat and RPG elements made this game a must own for Final Fantasy fanboys and fighters.
Plus, with local matches, you can even show your oponent how stronger it's your character.
We know that fighters on third person camera are annoying, specially on multiplayer. But that's not a problem on a handheld, without the annoying split screen.
The only drawback is the lack of online play, just add online on the next Dissida, Square.
3.
When Nintendo ported Zelda A Link to the Past on the Game Boy Advance, they added the best extra that was so popular before the Call of Duty Zombies.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past  (Four Swords)

This game took cooperative multiplayer into a whole new level.
With awesome level designs that force you to have other 3 players to progress, Four Swords was ahead of it's time.
It forced you to use your brain in order to progress.
Also you can even bring 3 persons with Game Boy Advances to play Four Swords on TV, thanks to the Gamecube.
After the game got released on the 3DS eshop, we can only hope to have Four Swords Adventure on the Wii U, also Pacman VS.
2.
Of course, I didn't forget to add Mario Kart on the list.
But which Mario Kart is the best portable.
Mario Kart Super Circuit? Mario Kart DS? or Mario Kart 7?
Well the answer is:
Mario Kart DS

DS, motherfucker!
This game was the first DS game with online multiplayer, also the game that put the classic Mario Kart racetracks from the previous consoles.
Mario Kart 7 has 16 characters, while DS has 12; and 7 has customizable karts and more items like the tanooki tail, the 7 item power and the fire flower.
But, honestly, I prefer the DS over the 7 anyday.
1.
You knew that this was coming.
What list of multiplayer games on portables can be without the Pokemon games.
But which is the best of the series.
(dramatic drum)

Pokemon Gold & Silver

Pokemon Gold & Silver it's by far the best game of the series, specially because they introduced the legendary pokemons like Lugia, Entei and so on. Plus new types of Pokemon like Dark and Steel, a more balanced gameplay and even going back to the Kanto region to fight against the gym leaders from the past Pokemon games.
Also the pokemons had a gender sign to show you if it's male of female; and of course you can play with a friend even if he has Pokemon Red, Blue or Yellow.
With the Upcoming Pokemon X & Y for the 3DS, I have the curiosity to play it, specially with 3D graphics and more Pokemon animations on the battles.
Just cross fingers if they finally replaced the annoying 8 bit Pokemon sounds into a more advanced sounds.

And that was the best 10 multiplayer games on portables, if your favorite game it's not on the list. Don't bitch about it.

I would say that Mario Kart would be higher for me but people have different preferences for sure. Great list! Cool that some of them can have up to 32 players! Dang!

One of my personal favorites of portable multiplayer games was Mario Kart: Super cicuit for the GBA. Me and my cousin played that game to death.

nice list, but mario kart Ds online was full of people who bounced around corners to maintain speed/go faster, without the mastery of doing it right, had no chance D;

Minor Correction: Shantotto was in the original Dissidia game as well.

That is a great list! i agree even if i haven't played some of those games. And I will simply take the opportunity to say that if you like RPG and possess a PSP, "you own it to yourself" to play (or at least try) Phantasy Star Portable 2. I feel this game is either underrated or dosen't receive enought credits in some way, even though some websites gave it good reviews. Correct me if i'm wrong. But i felt that i had to say this.

Could any game take the top spot other than pokemon? Love advance wars btw.

Way to represent the mobile FPS with Modern Combat 3! However, I would argue that NOVA 3 is a superior game in all aspects. I also totally agree with Pokémon Gold at #1. I love that game to death.

"Pokemon Gold & Silver it's by far the best game of the series, specially because they introduced the legendary pokemons like Lugia, Entei and so on."

Really? Most would say because of the improvements on the balancing due to the introduction of Steel and Dark types. Or the novelty of going back to Kanto and facing the eight original gyms plus Red.

Great blog, but I would suggest working on the formatting. Don't use so much "captioning". The standard non-formatted paragraphs are fine
