Top Ten worst Pokemon Abilities

1/9/13 2:02pm

So, I wrote a blog about a year ago where I talked about the Top Ten Best Pokemon Abilities. So now I have to make the Top Ten Worst Pokemon Abilities.

The abilities are based on their value in Competitive Play and are based on Gen V .

Here we go:

#10. Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal doubles the weight of the Pokemon that has the ability. This is mainly a negative ability as you would take twice as much damage from Grass Knot and other weight based moves.

However,Heavy Metal is only a Hidden Ability so it is improbable you would get a Pokemon that has this ability.

Pokemon with Heavy Metal: Some with Hidden Ability

#9. Weak Armor

Weak Armor Raises Speed but lowers Defense by one level each upon being hit by an attack.

Lowering one of your stats upon each attack you take could be devastating.Anytime you lower a stat , you are weakened and that could lose you a battle.

Pokemon with Weak Armor: Garbodor, others by Hidden Ability

#8. Illuminate

Illuminate raises the chance you run into a wild Pokemon.

It has no effect in battle, has a negative effect outside of battle and is especially annoying in areas such as caves or seas where wild Pokemon are already running rampant.

Pokemon with Illuminate: Staryu, Starmie, Chinchou, Lopunny

#7. Klutz

A Pokemon with Klutz is unable to hold items.

This defeats a lot of the strategy of Pokemon. A Pokemon with Klutz can't raise his stats or heal himself using held items. The Pokemon with Klutz will be severely limited in Competitive Battling due to this.

Pokemon with Klutz: Buneary, Lopunny, Audino.

#6. Normalize

Normalize makes all of a Pokemon's attacks automatically Normal type.

Like Klutz,a Pokemon with this ability is severely hindered in battle as Normal moves aren't super effective against any type and don't affect Ghost type Pokemon.

Pokemon with Normalize: Skitty, Delecatty

#5. Stall

Stall makes your Pokemon always move last.

This shouldn't even need any explanation, this ability makes sweepers impossible and means you can be taken out quickly.

Pokemon with Stall: Sableye

#4. Run Away

Run Away makes it easier for you to flee from your opponent. This is useless as you cannot flee from a Competitive Battle.

Pokemon with Run Away: Rattata, Raticate, Dodrio, Lillipup, Herdier...

#3. Slow Start

Slow Start temporarily cuts Attack and Speed Stats in half for the first five turns of a Pokemon Battle.

This means that for five turns you are in a severly weakened position. Your opponent could use your Slow Start to quickly knock you off.

Pokemon with Slow Start: Regigigas

#2. Truant

A Pokemon with the Truant ability can only attack every other turn.

This is pretty much like giving your opponent a free shot at killing you. Your opponent can attack twice in a row ! This is a crippling ability you shouldn't want any of your Pokemon to have.

Pokemon with Truant: Slaking

#1. Defeatist

A Pokemon with the Defeatist ability has its Attack and Special Attacked halved when its health is below 50%.

Usually an ability that lowers stats usually raises another.  However, Defeatist not only doesn't raise a stat but lowers two stats. If you have a Pokemon with Defeatist, you are pretty much done when your health is below 50%.

Pokemon with Defeatist: Archen, Archeops

Wow I knew about some abilities that were bad but these take the cake. If only there was one with an ability to automatically win a much? One can only hope.

However, I bet that these bad abilities exist to make some of the more OP Pokemon balanced out or something.

They didn't mention that Durant gets Traunt (hidden) so in a sense it just hinders it too much compared to Slaking, which it just balances it.

Archeops does have insane stats for a bird pokemon, but yes defeatist still sucks ass

For slaking truant is a balancing tactic because without it he could destroy pretty much every opponent. The best method to deal with this is to use skill swap in double or triple battles (honestly norman's slaking in gen 3 would've been almost impossible without this ability)

In fairness to slaking in exchange for truant it's attack is through the roof (More than double average). There are only 2 pokemon who have higher attack then him and both of them have about half the HP and Def. (one slightly higher and one slightly lower). One of the best combo's in the games is Slaking + Hyper Beam. It can one hit ko basically anything with Slaking's insane attack, and then the truant turn you have to rest anyway. So many of these abilities are situational, and most of them are unique to a pokemon or 2 for a reason.

I thought Klutz was the absolutely worst ability, but after seeing Defeatist, I knew you were right. I'm pretty sure there's a limit on the power of Grass Knot and Low Kick, so Heavy Metal won't really harm you that much, especially if the Pokemon is already much heavier than its opponent. There's also a tradeoff, as Heavy Slam does up to twice as much damage when used as well.

Surprisingly I'm going to say at least Klutz has a use (more of a gimmick but it works) objects like flame orb and toxic orb which inflict damage for holding them don't have an effect and can be placed on the opponents pokemon with the move fling. So its not entirely devoid of strategy but still is not that useful in the long run.

I've not followed since like generation 2 or 3, but it looks like they have come up with some stupid moves!
