[Update] In an interview with Australian outlet MMGN, Aonuma noted his remarks about the character who appears in the Zelda Wii U trailer were taken out of context and that they were made in jest. Link will remain as the hero of the franchise.

"Actually that comment I made jokingly. It's not that I said that it wasn't Link. It's that I never said that it was Link. It's not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way."

The legendary producer also took notice of the online speculation regarding the possibility of this hero being female but that's not the case either. This new Link, just his predecessors, is a man.

But Aonuma doesn't want players to get too focused on the appearance of the new Link because he is, as those before him were, a representation of the player.

While Zelda Wii U made its official trailer debut yesterday during Nintendo's E3 Direct show, a lot of the talk regarding what was shown revolved around Link's new appearance. Around the Internet, speculations ranged between Link being a female for this game to the possible connections with Ganondorf due to Link's gauntlets design.

In an interview with Venturebeat, Eiji Aonuma teased to not just assume Link was the character shown in the trailer and could actually be someone else instead. While he gave no other details, he did smile when the possibility of connections to Wind Waker for the new game was brought up.

“No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Zelda Wii U is currently planned for a TBA 2015 release date.
