Valve announces Steam Workshop compatibility for L4D2

9/23/12 1:40pm

The developers behind Left 4 Dead 2 announced on their official blog that Valve will be giving modders free-reign over L4D2 with the Steam Workshop tool set, which will allow them to alter the game and share their created content with other players over Steam.

However, the standard development tools that typically come with Steam Workshop won’t be the only things added into the mix via this update. The developers said they are experimenting with the Workshop to allow content to appear even more seamlessly into the game and that these Workshop experiments will be altered based on fan feedback.

“To compliment the new access to maps, weapons, and items, we are also creating an expanded scripting tool to allow deeper and more varied experiences inside of Left 4 Dead 2. Similar to the current Mutations, these experiences can be laid on top of existing maps or included with brand new maps. These new style Mutations will also be available from the Steam Workshop.”

While there is no set launch date, the dev team expects the Steam Workshop function to be ready to go for the PC, Mac, and Linux versions sometime next month.

This sounds awesome! I can’t wait to see what the community can come up with!

I give it 1 hour after release until giant penis swords are created and there's videos on youtube of zombies and tanks being beaten with said penis swords.

As cool as this sounds, I can't help but feel the anger of the people already modding this game. For all this time they have been working and guiding people on how to install their various mods. They will feel frustrated, and think that all their work is being cast aside. Also, the community of people who make and use these mods are not very "inclusive". Meaning, they will not welcome the flood of people using "their" mods. Just look at Skyrim. People who do not use the workshop hate the workshop, and look down on people who do use it. Also, I do not want to buy your Louboutins or your Jordans. Just saying.
