Vita sales are up thanks to the West
Despite the rough start in Japan, the Vita managed to sell through almost 600,000 units since it has become available in North America and Europe. To date, that puts the Vita at having sold nearly 1.2 million units worldwide, but only half of those sales are from Japan. Critically the reviews have been very positive in the U.S. despite a middling, but comprehensive launch line-up.
While it makes sense from a population perspective, I still thought it would take the West much longer to catch up with Japan’s eight week head start. Now Sony has to figure out how to sell another 14 million units and fast. The already 15 million Nintendo 3DS sales aren’t slowing down anytime soon and the Vita has to make up for lost time…

It would probably help the sales in Japan if Sony stopped putting out new versions of the PSP as well as releasing psp games over there.

Vita is a hard console to sell to the average person as no one is asking for it. if Vita was going to succede psp would already be in that position. if it worked with already owned ps3 games without remote play I could see myself considering it, but I want 3ds games portably and ps3 games in 3d on my ps3.

It's too early to declare the Vita up shit's creek, especially considering the turn-around the 3DS had, but it definitally needs to do better in Japan. The PSP was the dominate console there for a long time and Sony is probably hoping that the Vita becomes its heir because they have to know it's never going to be anything more than a niche device in the west. I've heard that some Japanese developers are considering releasing hardcore JRPGs on the 3DS, and that could be a huge blow to Sony since those are the games at really sold the PSP in Japan.

I would be extremely impressed if the Vita made it up to where the 3DS is as this point.

Well the fun thing is for now it seems like all the games I wanted for the vita came out at launch. Time will tell if there is anything else this year I'll get besides Hot shots Golf and Uncharted. but considering I have plenty of PSP rpgs to slug through and the 3ds' AAA title every now and then I can wait. Unlike the 3ds which was fricken horrible until Mario Land came out.
