Wii U aims for a future in free to play and microtransactions space

Iwata has gone on record during a Nintendo Q&A stating that Wii U will be receiving a “variety of purchase options and additional e-commerce options available at its launch.” In short, this means that developers will have the option “to freely take advantage of things like free to play and micro transactions...” Does this mean Nintendo is going free to play?

Iwata wouldn’t really say one way or another; they are just open to exploring ALL types of games. Even those games that are repeatedly misinterpreted as needing to trick you into playing. Honestly this is great for Nintendo. Playstation is already trying to approach the model and PC has seen its share of success stories, especially in the MMO scene. So what is the first Nintendo franchise to go free to play?
