Wii U will be selling at a loss according to Nintendo
For anyone who hasn’t already heard, Nintendo isn’t doing so hot. They posted another loss for this year, citing week 3DS sales as the main culprit. Through this though, Nintendo has revealed a few tidbits about the upcoming Wii U launch. The most important of which is the fact that Nintendo will be selling the console at a loss. Senior managing director Yoshihiro Mori confirmed this by stating
Nintendo would still like to sell around 5.5 million units before the end of the fiscal year and the Wii U launch window. While this isn’t unheard of, Nintendo is probably betting on strong Wii U sales throughout the holiday season, followed up with software sales. Anything to decrease the loss they might have to acknowledge come the end of 2012.

At a loss? With the specs they put in it I thought they be broke even.
the 3DS was the first time (after the price drop)
oh wow that is a load of BS, didn't know it was like that =/ (i'm happy PC games sell similar to US counterparts now, however I wish consoles would get the same treatment)
yea sure selling old hardware like is new you gotta loss alot of money
*WARNING! GRAMMAR NAZI!*
"They posted another loss for this year, citing week 3DS sales as the main culprit."
.....that should be "weak"
Once Christmas rolls around I'm sure that Nintendo will be doing just fine.
i'm not surprised that the 3ds is sluggish in sales, their release line up seems to be pretty anemic atm probably because they are prepping their WIi U launch.
I also doubt they are selling the WIi U at a loss. The console itself can't be too taxing considering it's got the same tech as the current consoles so i'd probably assume it's the result of their over glorified tablet controller. If they really want this to fly then their only choice is to bank on massive sales of both the console and the games that can properly utilize the tablet controller
i believe they were selling the 3ds at a loss when they introduced the price cut or maybe it might have been some other console, i can't really remember
Oh, boo hoo. The Wii sold like hot cakes and their franchises make oodles of money. The company couldn't be in a better position to make business. The machine should be about making something amazing. How much we want to play your games determines the price.
I heard they are going to be around $150
And they're allowed to get away with such bullshit? What a bunch of selfish douchebags.
Wow I'm kind of disappointed. Sean is linking vg247 who is quoting IGN who is quoting bloomberg... Don't people go to the source anymore to confirm and examine a story? sheesh..
I am still at a loss for what this all will mean. The original story with bloomberg examines the market and explains that Nintendo is feeling the heat due to losses in 3ds sales due to competition with apple and iphone/tablet gaming. Despite the losses and poor exchange rate (they're banking on the US and EU sales of hardware pretty heavily at this point) sales of the Wiiu are expected to try to recoup some of their reported $300 million fiscal loss. They're also hoping to sell 5.5 million WiiU's to pull this off.. no small feat.
What I find odd is that every source for this "selling at a loss" statement is based on the press conference and a single quote that says something akin to 'manufacturing is expensive, and they priced the system at what consumers would be comfortable with'. They don't say any specifics, or that the loss is significant or disastrous in anyway. For all we know nintendo could be losing all of $.05 per console. But you're all jumping on the loss like it's something major.
Makes me wonder if reporting the loss is both factual, but moreso a political statement so that people are sympathetic to nintendo. I wouldn't be surprised. If Nintendo loses a small amoiunt fo money per console, but recoups it quickly in online digital sales, licensing, peripherals, and other forms of incoming purchases, then this is actually a wise move. Play the role of " we're not making any profit from the sale of the nintendo Wiiu.. " and still rake in cash from the consumers on the backend.
