Wii U will not ban Used Games

6/22/12 7:00pm
tl;dr

Used games can be used on the Wii U.

As you all know, when selling games to GameStop and Best Buy, retailers will give you trade in credit for used games, and then re-sell those games to gain profits for themselves. This does hurt the video game companies, because every time people buy a new game the profits go to developers/publishers, but when people buy a used game the profit goes to the company that sold the used game.

The rumor keeps on flying around that Microsoft and Sony want to ban used games on their next gen consoles. That has not been unverified or denied by Microsoft or Sony. Even though Microsoft and Sony might ban used games on their next generation consoles, Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U will not ban used games as from what Nintendo of America EVP Scott Moffitt says.

“We haven’t incorporated any features that will discourage used game sales at this point. We’re not trying to circumvent that.”

It’s unknown on whether Nintendo will ban used games in the future but it good to see that their next generation console will be able to play used games. So if Sony and Microsoft next gen consoles ban used games, let’s hope that the Wii U will keep GameStop alive.

That's actually a brilliant strategy. If Microsoft and Sony ban used games, Nintendo's console will become the monopoly of having the freedom and ability to play used games, thus encouraging people to buy more games for the system, new or used. It could really be a deciding factor in who buys what console, even though technically the used games racket would still be hurting them.

I think people are overestimating damage that used games cause the industry. The majority of a game's sales are from initial release, and the used game market doesn't doesn't impact sales significantly in any way until weeks later. It also gives people who buy many new games some way to get money back to buy newer ones, and keeps companies who sell older games in business, which is important because older games would either be impossible to get, or be distributed online making the industry stagnant.

Nintendo needs to allow third party titles on the Wii U to give you Club Nintendo coins. That way new game sales can be encouraged for the game.

This has made the decision for me. Looks like I will be getting a Wii U in the future, sorry Sony and Microsoft.

If sony and microsoft do take actions to alienate used gamers, i hope nintendo makes a lot of money from sony and microsoft fans who would rather have the freedom to game used than stick with sony or microsoft.

I don't know why they would EVER ban used games when those new games will eventually become used down the line.
