Would you buy a Boondock Saints “co-op shooter”?

Boondock Saints was introduced to me through a “borrowed” Blockbuster VHS tape shared amongst my college buddies. That last statement already dates this entire topic. Who still uses VHS? What’s a Blockbuster? It’s been how long since Sean was in college? Which kind of brings me to the point; who they are making this game for?

While the developer Critical Mass is sure they “don’t want to do a crap-ass franchise game,” and are “looking to expand the story, not just retell the franchise”, it might be too late. This game, which was originally teased at SXSW, hopes to capitalize on the cult following behind a movie from 1999 and it less popular sequel from a few years ago.

Maybe there is still some spark realized after that sequel came out, but the game had better be good, because the license will only carry it so far. It is confirmed to be coming on PC and Xbox 360, maybe even the PS3. Critical Mass will be holding previews for press at PAX East and E3, so we should have mormore information later. Hopefully they will at least let me reenact that scene with Rocco and the cat.

I disapprove of this

The film has a cult following that I am very much a part of and it's always cool for once in a blue moon you see someone with a T-shirt or the tattoos or knows the verse is always nice. The chance Troy Duffy had to turn it into something huge has left him. Shortly after I saw it in 2001 my brother left for college in 2002. When he came home after his first year he said he heard rumors of a sequel being in the works called "All Saints Day" and that became the subject of conversation every time we saw each other in person. What it's status is or was on IMDB so forth and so on. By the time All Saints Day got released, I did some digging around and found out the film was in development hell for the better part of a decade with principle photography only getting started in 2008 before FINALLY being completed in 2009. To top it all off there was the obligatory comic book tie-in as well that I didn't even know existed until AFTER I looked all this information up. The only way I could see this game even remotely working is if the rumored 3rd film "Saints Preserve Us" get's green lighted and then they find funding for it through the producers of the film.

Let the cult movie stay a cult movie, don't sully it's line with a piss poor game. I've been trying to prototype the game in my mind since watching the original film around the time of the release of Max Payne. I just didn't "feel" it working out back then, and I still that way now.

But the whole reason Boondock Saints was so small for a long time was because Troy Duffy royally pissed off the Weinstein Brothers, and they did everything in their power to try and destroy the film
