[UPDATE] Xbox 360 is sticking with the MS Points. Sorry money IRL

10/10/12 5:00pm

UPDATE: We might have jumped the gun on this story a little. While I can only imagine Microsoft’s logic, it seems that The Verge’s discovery of Windows 8 supporting credit transactions will not be shared by its older brother, the Xbox 360. A Microsoft Spokesperson had this to say; "Microsoft Points continue to be the currency for purchasing content for the Xbox 360 console". LAME.

As spotted in a build of the Windows 8 beta, it looks like Microsoft will be moving away from their fictional currency, Microsoft Points. The offset exchange rate (100 points = $1.25) has been a tricky proposition for years now and it seems with the next Xbox Dashboard update that might be a thing of the past.

The Verge has discovered that in the Windows 8 payment system for the latest build, users are able to pay using either currency, but the store defaults to credit card. With the Windows 8 update becoming official later this month, it shouldn’t be long before the change also comes to Xbox 360. Who’s excited?

I kind of knew this story was a little bit off, simply because my store just got some MS points for sale.

It would cause less confusion if they just used real money. Then again, they have been using MS points for quite some time now...

I don't mind Microsoft having their own points, I just wish it wasn't weird. I know you can figure it out, but still. I mean Nintendo Wii's is 100 points = $1. That's perfect.

I'm glad they're keeping the points too becuase I get FREE points by using Bing! You all can too by going to http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9778718&rrid=_88aea5a4-3187-85c2-6800-89...

I like this, I was afraid with a switch to real currency you wouldn't be able to get pre-paid cards anymore. Yay for Microsoft for this.

If they do it on the consoles it won't be until the successor of the 360 launches, a clean break between the consoles and a way to relaunch the marketplace.

RE: To the update about microsoft sticking with points... I wouldn't have a problem if ALL content on XBL was purchasable with points... but only about half the content is. All I want is for Microsoft to stop splitting the market.

I have yet to see a single thing on XBL that wasn't purchasable with points, I know Games on Demand have prices listed in real money, but I'm pretty sure you can use points for those too.
