Xbox Live Rewards is changing the meta-game by adding rebates

9/28/12 3:00pm

The Xbox Live Gamerscore has been the ultimate ePenis since its inception back in 2005. Now it looks like all those who’ve been grinding Achievement Points will finally be seeing a pay off. Subscribers will not only receive discounts on content, but they are also assigned a Xbox Live Rewards rank (rank title in parenthesis).

Gold subscribers who have a Gamerscore of 25,000 (Legend) or more will receive 2% back on all purchase on Xbox Live. Users with a Gamerscore between 10,000 and 25,000 (Champion) will receive a 1% rebate. And anyone who has a score over 3,000 (Contender) will receive a “special gift” on their birthday. That gift has an approximate retail value of $.25.

In order for this to happen though, you must not only be a Gold Member, but you must also enroll in Xbox Live Rewards. If you aren’t, click through to sign up. Are all you Achievement Hunters excited by this news? Or do you think the rebates should even greater as users approach Gamerscores of 35K, 50K, or even 100K?

Something tells me this is Microsofts way of actually fucking over reward members. As of right now reward members get a 5% back on all XBL purchases, and something tells me that when this new achievement system hits that 1 and 2% discount will replace the 5% back. Also, just saying that even with 25k gamerscore, to save enough to buy a cheap 400MSP game you have to spend 20,000 MSP or $250.

You know what would make an even better present? Handing out real life trophies like the ones in the picture above. Nintendo gave Mario statues to Club Nintendo Elite members a few years back and racking up a gamerscore of 25,000 is much harder than typing in some codes on a pamphlet. Go big or go home Microsoft.
