You got something wrong. You said, during the shootdodge, that provided he have the adrenaline, it'll go into slow motion. Actually the game allows him to shootdodge in slow motion even if you're completely empty on adrenaline. Also I don't know how anyone could reccomend only renting. I've beat this game 4 times, first on easy, then on medium, then on hard, and finally on hardcore. That's not even mentioning arcade mode, or New York Minute which you didn't touch upon. You didn't list the replayability of finding golden guns and clues, or how beating the game on different difficulties gives you unlocks, like playing as different versions of Max Payne including old school Max and unlockable cheat codes. It's brimming with more replay value then any third person shooter out on the market and that's just the single player. I don't know how anyone could only play this game for just a week of renting it.

considering how much I hated it, and considering before this came out your picture was max payne I feel your comments to be hugely bias. If red dead had no free roam, and half the length of campaign, and only included the gun fights in campaign (no horses or lasso) and then its same death match etc for multiplayer, then got rid of the hand to hand combat and then replaced it all with two handed weapons, diving into combat, follow the bullet moments(that get really old really fast) and slow motion finishers (that get old because you tend to see the same 5 over and over again. I am just saying it would be lucky to get an 8. I found both the gta episodes even by them self were better then this game (same length). This game was an obvious cash in, considering he gave 8 to kingdoms of amalur and 7 to kid icarus, I am ready to complain the score is way to high, I'd even say this deserves a lower score then mario tennis, at least that game got the basic premise of the series right.

You accuse me of bias. It is true I love the Max Payne games. It is true that the first two are my favorite games of all time. However I'm not so blinded as to say something's good when it's not. I was a huge Indiana Jones fan. I used to watch the first three movies all the time when I was a kid. When I saw the trailer for Indiana Jones 4, I couldn't be more excited. I anticipated that release so much and counted down the days until seeing it like I did with Max Payne 3. Guess what? It sucked. I knew immediately that it sucked and no amount of me wanting it to be good changed the way I felt about it. Same with Star Wars prequels and I grew up with Sonic the hedgehog, but you won't see me playing his modern iterations. I never allow myself to be deluded by what I want to something to be. If something isn't what I want it to be, I get disappointed, not be in denial. There are aspects I'm disappointed with Max Payne 3. The story, the writing, the atmosphere. All things I felt are worse than the previous two. However, gameplay, my most important feature, delivers in spades. It makes you feel like an action hero. It allows you to craft the shootouts with style. It's why I love the underrated Stranglehold. I'm a sucker for bullet time and I'm a sucker for games that let you kill with style. It's what I wanted with Max Payne 3 and its what I got. I'm not all gushing over the game either. I don't care for the multiplayer. You level up too slow, not many people are playing online and its harder to rack up kills then it should be. I haven't even mentioned the top of the line graphics, the amazing voice acting, etc. You can disagree with me, but don't try to assume why I believe a certain way.

Max payne sucked hard, Sonic generations, and sonic unleashed were amazing.

I am sick of arguing though, if you want generic cover based shooters its your call. I am just pretty sure you dont play many video games.

When you said that Sonic Unleashed was "amazing" you automatically showed you idiocy. Your opinion is officially invalid.

Lipnox88

May 30, 2012 - 1:04am

The day time stages were amazing once you've trecked past the terrible werehog moments the game is just modern sonic generations but in different places around the world versus different parts of sonic's past. sonic unleashed lacks 3d tv support, and classic sonic, but where it does it right it does it right. look at the speedruns for the ps3 or 360 version of the game and you can easily see why its a favorite of mine. Action packed levels with an endless amount of discover-able shortcuts/alternate paths.

a lot of people seem to like this game, and without knowing there past history with games they've played im going to accept that I am more into freeroam rockstar games and the Noir atmosphere has mostly evolved as Max payne himself has evolved. I am just really surprised by what I played that people like this game.

May 28, 2012 - 10:25pm

I said "rent it" because I didn't find the game fun enough to play through more than once. It's a standard cover based shooter with slow-mo mechanics. That's about it.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 11:29pm

what is a standard cover based shooter then? Uncharted is more standard then this is and I love Uncharted. This game does pure gameplay better than most out there, yet you're more hard on it. I just don't get all the critics of the game. If you saw my blog, I was as concerned as anybody. Even still I have complaints about the writing and atmosphere, but I absolutely can not complain about the gameplay.

Lipnox88

May 29, 2012 - 1:14am

Graphics, story, lack of climbing... these things are why uncharted was better, plus that game came out years ago and I found uncharted 3 stale. this was just uncharted style game without the puzzles or the innovative moments, or the climbing.

REVULSIVE

He's not complaining about the gameplay. It's just a recommendation... I love Max Payne too and even I disagree with Jared's recommendation, but that's why there's a community rating (which I should add says Buy It).

Pretty much what I gathered from your review. Seems to be a lot of critics out today for this review :( I thought it was pretty good.

Bought it on day one, haven't regretted it at all. The story is amazing and the details in the game are just phenomenal.

Moon Spirit

May 28, 2012 - 9:24pm

I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10. It is really well presented, and the game mechanics do have some flaws. Especially when you get a final wind. When that happens, and you're out of ammo or at a badly placed position, it becomes a drag. But then again, it feels just like exactly you won't get that 2nd wind if you don't kill your perp.

REVULSIVE

Great review. It's funny, I've gotten so used to regenerating health in video games, but I'm really happy they stuck with the health system from the old games. Regenerating health would've ruined it.

The metaphors were one of the things that did it for me in the 2nd game. Other than the metaphors, I thought the dialogue as a whole was on a weaker level than in the previous game.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 9:47pm

I also agree that the dialogue was weaker. It was too forced and they had Max say some out of character stuff. I didn't like how modern everybody was. Where were the classic, archetypal characters of the past Max Payne games?

caboose_-1

May 28, 2012 - 9:18pm

Great, now all I need to do is play Max Payne 1 and 2 for the first time. :-P

Robert G Ernst 64

I played the first game, loved the story, loved the game. Played the second game, story wasn't so great, thought it was only average or below average. I enjoyed reading the review, I get what you mean with the Rockstar realistic movement thing, It's an annoyance but I try not to let it distract me unless it's really bad. I'll definitely take your advice on renting it, thank you!

The video flashes and filters are my biggest concerns with the game since I hated how it was done in Halo 3 especially in the Gravemind level and got headaches after a while.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 9:44pm

It's not as prevalent during gameplay. When you take a painkiller it does it and during certain moments it wants to highlight something it does it. Other than that its mostly a cutscene effect.

Lipnox88

May 29, 2012 - 1:15am

cutscenes that take up 1/3rd of the game.

King Meatball I

May 28, 2012 - 9:56pm

Good to hear. Saw the episode on Screw Around and another place that had the first hour or levels in the game and noticed those filter effects were used way too much and was worried it was used almost as much during the entire game.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 9:58pm

well maybe it is bad. I don't get headaches from visual stuff as much as a lot of people, so it might seem to annoying for you.

King Meatball I

May 28, 2012 - 11:39pm

To be honest Halo 3 was the only game to actually give me headaches and I didn't have a problem with the visual effects done during the dream levels of the first 2 Max Payne games.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 11:42pm

It probably won't be too bad then.

MarzGurl

May 28, 2012 - 8:57pm

I was sort of curious if Max Payne 3 as a story held up at all. I'll assume that since it wasn't mentioned (outside of how well presented the cutscenes were) that it was just sort of there and wasn't worth the mention.

Jared

May 28, 2012 - 9:13pm

Yeah, it wasn't spectacular. At least it wasn't bogged down by the heavy use of unnecessary metaphors like in Max Payne 2.

Anti_Hipster

May 28, 2012 - 9:45pm

I understand that I'm a Max Payne fanboy, but the metaphors are integral to the style of Max Payne.

Great and detailed review, Jared! I have yet to complete Max Payne 2, but I definitely want to buy this game now!

MarzGurl

May 28, 2012 - 9:00pm

Wow, bro.

Look at the score. It's still a solid 8. A rent is suggested for anyone on the fence. You obviously love it. I hope you've purchased your copy. But I'm sure not everyone is as sure as you are. Let 'em find out for themselves why the game is good.

Besides. Look at that sweet community score.
