Unlike many RPGs "at the time" - this is a retrospective. This game came out in 94 and there weren't a lot of RPGs back then with voiceless or silent main characters (other than Link) but that wasn't an RPG. When I write my reviews, I write them within the context of the time period from which they originated.

Lufia 1, Secret of mana, Any of the SMT games (though they never made it out here on the SNES), Robotrek, Paladins Quest, Breath of fire, Breath of fire 2, Earthbound, Soul Blazer, actraiser, Illusion of gaia, all came out :at that time: and all were silent heroes.
"Unlike many other rpgs" You
"Unlike many other rpgs" You really haven't played many rpgs if you think "many other rpgs" didn't have silent heroes.
