Dullcalibur???

So as inevitably as the tides, every Wednesday brings a new piece by everybody's favorite angry British gamer, Yahtzee. And with this comes to me solace that I'm not the only one that thinks the Soul series is just an exercise in button mashing. Everything that I have heard about Soulcalibur (Yes it's one word) has been nothing but good, but when I recently purchased a used copy of Soulcalibur II and popped it into my PS2, I was disaponted. After choosing Heihachi (Of Tekken fame), I proceded to waste my opponent by pressing two buttons over and over. Now recently, one of my co-workers purchased Soulcalibur IV. At that time I recounted my experience with Soulcalibur II. I mentioned that I won my matches by mashing buttons. But he responded that “you can't do that if you want to be strategic.” But I wondered to myself, “Why?”. Why bother being strategic if you can simply win the match by pressing buttons over and over? Button mashing is not fun for me. But I guess thats how I have to look at it. I've always been a strong believer that If you honestly have fun with a game, no review, no matter how scathing or harsh, it won't matter, cause you, the gamer, is having fun with the game, and after all, isn't that what games are about (I promise I'll use fewer commas from here on)? In Soulcalibur's defense though, I have seen something related in Street Fighter Alpha 3. During a recent trip to Washington to visit my cousins, we found ourselves at my cousins, parents, friends house, with nothing to do. Luckily I had brought along my PSP and Street Fighter Alpha 3. Now I'm decent at the game, but my cousin on the other hand, has little experience with any kind of fighting games, but he had managed to make it to about the 6th match, without using any kind of special attacks (What character he was using now escapes me.) And he wound up asking me a similar question I asked myself about Soulcalibur, why use specials if you can get through by button mashing? But I guess the moral to this story is, if you truly have fun with a game, don't let anyone tell you you're not. Now I'm off to play one of my favorites ShaqFu! (I kid you.)

Dullcalibur! Hardy har! I see what you did thar!

If you don't like button mashing, why do you do it? And your obviously playing on an easy difficulty because there is no way you could win a match by button mashing on some of the higher difficulty settings. I don't know who this yahtzee guy his, but he should shut the fuck up if he is a professional reviewer and bitches on ludicrous.

Hmmm....

Maybe I will give Soulcalibur II another go on a harder difficulty. And as for Yahtzee, don't hate on him to much. He's hardly a profesional reviewer, and does his reviews more for fun. Think kind of like the AVGN but newer games. He tends to take on big name titles and points out all the flaws, but at the end of the day, you can tell he actually likes quite a few of them.
