If there’s a good game I hate, it’s Apollo Justice. “Crickey”, you say, “ What did that attractive young man say? That he hated a good game?” Well yes I do. The graphics are great for an Ace Attorney game, exciting cases, and all that, but I still hate it!
My first problem with Apollo Justice, is Phoenix Wright. Why? BECAUSE APOLLO JUSTICE RUINED THE PHOENIX WRIGHT SERIES. As you all know, in Apollo Justice, you star as: Apollo Justice ( *gasps*). That wouldn’t have been a problem, if it hadn’t been for the fact that this happens 7 years after Phoenix Wright Trials And Tribulations, and Phoenix Wright has been stripped of his badge. Now he’s one of the stereotypical mentor types from animes. Those really cool ones, he acts coolly and always has a firm grip on things, and they’re trying to make him look cool. Well, he doesn’t look cool, he looks like a frikkin hobo!
I can understand wanting to give Phoenix an apprentice, but stripping him of his rank? That means NO new Phoenix Wright titles, unless they want to create a time paradox, or a game where we have to play as Hobo Wright. No, screw that, I don’t want to play as Hobo Wright, I want Phoenix. They’ve changed his character, they don’t show his spikey hair unless it’s a flashback, and they removed all old characters, except the Judge and prosecutor Payne. Now that pissed me off even more. I wanted Detective Dick Gumshoe ( ok, he makes a SMALL appearance, but that’s not half as much as I wanted), I expected Lotta Hart, I expected Wendy Oldbag, or maybe even a 15-17 year old Pearl Fey. But what did I get? A big “F U” slapped straight at my face.

Also, Capcom are being very inconsistent, I can accept Phoenix losing his badge for a short span of time, but remember: Miles Edgeworth, popular and influential prosecuting attorney, hard working detective Dick Gumshoe, prosecuting prodigy Franzisca Von Karma and of course Maya Fey, who now has become Master of the Kurain family ( remember that the Fey Master always has contacts with the most powerful people and therefore should have some influence). Is it logical that these people would stand back and not do anything? NO!
I’d expect Gumshoe to go hunting for evidence immediately, I’d expect Von Karma and Edgeworth to fly in and solve the mystery easily, you’d expect Maya to at least travel to town to punch Phoenix for being tricked! I know that logic isn’t essential in a game, but at least the writers should be able to imagine their character’s own.
What I liked about the previous Ace Attorney games was that most of the things were possible, except the spirit channelling ( therefore the entire last case in PH 3), but Apollo Justice takes the series to a new level of stupidity!
( SPOILER)
Firstly, case 2. You all remember, the doctor strangling Alita Tiala? He thought she died and was going to dump her body.
Well ask yourself this: WHAT SELF RESPECTING DOCTOR WOULD MISTAKE A FAINTING FIT FOR A FRIKKIN DEATH?
Case 3: You all remember Lamiroir’s illusion trick? She said she had to run through the air vent while singing. Seriously, singing while she runs in a damp passage? Firstly her footsteps would’ve been heard, second she’d be more out of breath! And remember Machi Tobaye being accused of killing LeTouse with a colt .45 revolver? They said it was a powerful gun that would dislocate the shoulder of someone not used to it. The murderer got his shoulder dislocated. How stupid would it be of a lawyer not to mention the unlikelihood of a 12 year old who has never held a gun, firing a colt.45 and not getting his shoulder effed up? My entire first and second time of playing the game ( second time was for the sole purpose of this blog), I was muttering: You idiot, he’s 12-13 years old, it’s a .45! How stupid are you?
And then in the flashback where you play as Phoenix Wright, you get to see Dick Gumshoe yet again, but wait a minute. He’s wearing his green coat! Don’t anyone remember PH3? Maggey, Gumshoe’s love interest gave him a new brown coat. Anyone who has played PH2 & 3 would know that Gumshoe would cherish anything she gave him! Then why is he wearing a green coat?!

And last but not least: Time Paradox.
Remember first time you’re in Gavin’s cell when you’re playing as Phoenix while gathering evidence? You talk to Gavin and he gives you his nail polish.
Now you go to the Drew Studio 7 years ago. You see a young Vera Misham and you use your Magatama.
You’re supposed to guess what her lucky charm is. Present evidence: Nail Polish ( acquired 7 years later in solitary cell 13)
“ Is this the charm?”
“ Ah!”
“ The same bottle’s over there on the desk.”
Yes, there was an identical bottle on the desk, but Phoenix did not present that bottle. He presented the bottle he got from Gavin. Reread: “ The same bottle’s over there on the desk.”
Now gameplay issues:
My main issue is the lack of touch screen tasks. Sure the bracelet comes often enough, but what about finger prints? Foot prints? Luminol? After hearing that Apollo Justice is the first Ace Attorney game made with the DS in mind ( the PH games being GBA ports), I expected loads of cool touch screen stuff. What do I get? Some mediocre stuff! Sure, they’re exciting to do, but you only get to do them once! If there had been more touch screen things it would have been ok, but there barely are any! Also, the mix board thing was just frustrating.
So in conclusion:
Apollo Justice is a great game, but it took away almost everything I liked from the series, and should’ve used the DS’s touch screen more.
