^^ needs no explaination. Also I will put any rpg, strategy, turn based, real time, action rpg. If its has rpg in its banner, its qualified, aight. Lets go.
10. Fire Emblem for the GBA
While this game series is huge in japan, we in the states didn't this series till 2003 (well 2001 when Marth and Roy were Super Smash Bros melee but thats a different arguement all together) with the release of Fire Emblem on the Game Boy Advance and instantly this game wouldn't leave my GBA's Cartridge slot for the next few months (it left when I got Advanced Wars 2), easy, fun and addicting, this game was made from the ground up for the GBA and this game fits live a glove. With great animation, sound and gameplay that was easy to learn but still had enough going for it for everyone to enjoy, this game was awesome. Also as a side note, this is actually the second game for the GBA, the first which was Japan only, was the hard as hell Fire Emblem The Sealing Sword which starred Roy......who sucked.
9. Yggdras Union We'll Never Fight Alone for GBA and PSP
Unpronouncable names aside, this game kicked ass. Take Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle and a dab of the saturn classic Dragon Force, this game is fucking cool. If you look at the games cover (and the art in general) you would think "What kind of girly game is this?", due to the fact that all of the characters are extreamly cutesy, but don't be fooled there is a deep and engaging rpg to be found in this adorable package. Great battle graphics, engaging gameplay and great sound (well for the GBA anyways) this game is completly worth it, and if you missed it the first time its coming out next month on the psp with redrawn sprites and graphics. Kick ass
8. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne for the PS2
When you think of JRPGS what do you think, cutesy games about a young boy saving the world and getting the girl. In this game none of that happens in fact the notion of saving the world, does not exist within this game. In fact in this game, the world ends within the first 15 minutes of gameplay and did I mention you get turned in to a half demon and half human. Any more and I run the chance of ruining the story (which is really good). The gameplay though, is fucking brutal. To get the gist imagine pokemon but really hard, religous imagry. Coming out in 2004 here, this game became hard to find due to a low print count but recently this game was re issued so if you need a challenge look no further.
7. Final Fantasy 4 for GBA, SNES, PS1, DS.
One of the games that helped in bringing RPGs to the limelight, Final Fantasy 4 is a great rpg. The story is about Cecil tring to prevent some guy from destroying the world or in other words the same scenario every final fantasy has used since this game. The gameplay was simple but enjoyable featuring the ATB that required you to think on your toes, while today its simplistic, its still extreamly enjoyable and great RPG to start with. This game has been ported to the GBA, PS1 (packaged with another game on this list I will talk about), and remade on the DS. So if you can't play this game, you better have a excuse.
6. Chrono Trigger for SNES, PS1, DS
take final fantasy add a unique and fun combat sytem and add in Akira toriyama (creator Of Dragon Ball) character designs and this is what you get. Some consider this the best game Square has made, other consider this the best RPG ever made. I don't really think I need to talk about it anymore (unless your a complete n00b)
5. Fallout 1&2 for the PC
The only game series that can call itself Diablo's peer, fallout is a fun spoof on all the 50's nuclear paranoia. In both games your going out to save your tribe/vault from extinction, and so your ousted with only a weapon (I belive you only get a spear in Fallout 2 but correct me on that) and a vault 13 jacket and into the wide world of the hillarious post apocalyptic United States. These games gave you freedom that is only rivaled by GTA and are extreamly memorable, if it werent for the bugs in 2, and fallot tactics you could say this is the crowning RPG series from america.
4. Diablo 2 for The PC
Why diablo 2 over 1. SIMPLE. Online, while it was avaliable in 1, it was damn near perfect in diablo 2, with simple drop in/drop out type gameplay, you could play this game for months and not get bored. Simple, easy, click like hell gameplay that was addictive as it was fun, if there is a excuse for not playing this game, it isnt good enough, check this game out.
3. The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion for The PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3
If your gonna bitch and moan about this, get real. This game took what morrowind was tring to do and perfected it. With massive amounts of freedom, after your second or third story missions (which is about the kings heir or something I forgot) you can literally never touch the story for a while, with more then enough side quests to occuby your time for months, with beutiful, graphics, sound and gameplay the was easy for noobs but deep too, the fact that ES fans bitch about this game being too mainstream baffles me. I have played every ES game (Arena, Daggerfall and morrowind) and this game perfects the formula, arena I can't really play now (have tried but never got more then a few hours), Daggerfall is impossible to play on modern computers (that and the game was impossibly huge, bigger the GTA san andreas, no joke) due to compatibility, and morrowind being fucking confusing (tring to find a specific house where everything looks the same, yeah I really like that), Oblivion rules.
2. Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 and PSP
If shakespere made a game, this would probably it. Final Fantasy Tactics pwns everything else from the final fantasy franchise. Release a scant few months after 7, many overlooked this, but for those who didn't, they were rewarded with one of the best games, if not the best, square has ever made. The story line is about Ramza Beulove, a noble turned mercinary, tring to figure out why this war broke out. It turns into a giant conspiracy that he becomes a part of. The gameplay is however the best part. This game unlike others, is a tatical rpg, in the vein of shining force but ALOT deeper, with more then a couple dozen classes you can out fit your characters with and secret ones like Orlando Cid (who basically makes the game extreamly easy once you get him) and Cloud Strife (of final fantasy 7 fame), this game has everything, and a awesome sound track. When it was originally released it suffered from a ham fisted translation that made the game hard to follow (I played the game well up to its rerelease on the psp and still didn't get it) but the PSP port made the game much easier to follow and the psp version had, extra missions, multiplayer (this works a lot better then you would think) and voice acting not to mention being portable, but it unfortunetly suffered from some slowdown (which is not as bad as some fans want to make it out to be) and sound issues. Either way your going to get a awesome game from the company final fantasy built, if only they could make something other then final fantasy.........
1. Xenogears for the PS1
.....and that game is Xenogears. Released in 1998 this game makes you piss yourself with its awesomeness. From the begining to the end, nothing in this game dissapoints. The combat system which is unlike anything ever seen, is a mix between a fighter and final fantasy. Allowing you to pull off deathblows, to bet down your opponents and did i mention you can get in giant fucking mechs!!!. The Story follows fei, a young adult from a small village, who one day has his life turned on his head when his village is attacked and destroyed, with no other options he boards a gear to fight them off. When all is said and done, his best friend and fiance are dead and the town for lack of a better word, drives him out, out of fear. From there his journey begins that we lead him to uncover his complex past. With a diverse and memorable cast of characters, and a plot thats just as immersive, not playing this game is like a insult to yourself. Not just an insult a CRIME. Unlike other hits from square though, this is the only game that doesn't get whored around like all the other successful square games, strangely. However this was released on the japanese PSN which leads me to ask, Square please bring it to the american PSN.
umm
dude fire emblem isnt a strategy game?
You know , a muffin can be very filling
Yes.
And so is Final Fantasy Tactics.
It's a Strategy RPG
and why is there no World Ends With You
---------------------------------------------------------
Big name, awesome at games
haven't played it
haven't played it unfortuently. Planned on it but got sidetracked.
Well..
It should be a Top 10 Favourite RPG not a Top 10 RPG because many of them sholdn't be there in my opinion (And WTF? Isn't FFIV a 3D remake on the DS? 2D to 3D make a game much different)
like what...
..no seiriously I wnat to know.
Yggdras Union We'll Never
Yggdras Union We'll Never Fight, Alone Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne ,Fallout 1&2, The Elder Scrolls 4 and maybe Zenogears should have been lower. You skiped FFVII, FFVI, Secret Of Mana (Seiken Dentetsu. sorry for the bad spelling) and may others...Sorry but I don,t like your list. Your blog deserve a 5 because you wrote a lot of thing and I respect it but IMO it's more like a Top 10 Favourite RPG and how could you forget about Zelda?
I forgot zelda cause....
its more of a action-adventure then rpg. Then only one that was rpg like was zelda 2 and I didn't really get into that one because it was brutally difficult (not g&g or battle toads difficutlt but still), ff7 and 6 too me get overrated, as much as i like 7 (still haven't played 6 enough) secret of mana was kinda meh for me, tried to like it though.
Replace #10 with breath of
Replace #10 with breath of fire IV and you have a pretty good list.
Glad to see
Glad to see you changed your title! LOL!
