360, Wii, or PS3?

Before getting to the actual content I would like to state that the opinions listed below are mine, mine, mine, mine, mine. If you are at all offended the screw you, you're probably no where near where I live and therefore can't bitch about it without someone bitching back.

With the price drop finally here, I can finally own and rant on Microsoft's Xbox 360. Now if you are truly a hardcore, bare-to-the-bones gamer then you might already own the 360. It is no secret that the 360 has some of the best graphics in the biz along with flawless online play. Microsoft is also responsible for some popular first-party titles like Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. Despite the obvious hardware flaws that crippled sales shortly after release, the Xbox probably has the highest quality potential of all other consoles in this generation.

Now here's one that might need some hardware and (more importantly) software improvement. The Sony Playstation 3 might have some on the best graphics and features that are standard today but it is still lacking in first-party software support. Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is a quality system but it just seems a bit lacking in what a gamer looks for in a console. Some of the issues that need drastic improvement would have to be it's size. It is simply to huge to keep with my other systems! Whoever designed the cosmetics needs to make a new slimmer design. Just look at the Nintendo Wii; it's tiny! Furthermore, the system is very lacking in good first-party titles (or at least some original titles). In conclusion, the PS3 is okay, but it's a little.....meh.

Now here's a console that will always have a special place in my heart. Although it may not appeal to hardcore gamers or have as much potential as the 360, it has a certain charm that no gamer can resist. Not only can the Nintendo Wii match the 360's Live Arcade (well almost anyway) with the Virtual Console feature, but it can involve the whole family too. Shigeru Myamoto once explained that he wanted the Wii to be something that the family can do together.

While gamers alone might not enjoy the library of family oriented games, they can still enjoy the plentiful, kick ass first-party titles. A word of caution though, never get third-party titles (with the exception of No More Heroes and, maybe, MadWorld [I haven't seen enough of it to want to recommend it]); anyway, third-parties suck for the Wii!

Now I can see where I might have lost some readers' interest, but, once again, hear me out. The Wii is meant for a multiple players immediately next to each other, but it doesn't have to be. Let me explain, the Wii is only as fun as you want it to be. If you just play some good games through, then you can't deny how much fun you had, you just can't man! It's just like eating a chili-cheese dog and nachos. It's just good, old-fashioned fun!

For those who skipped my brief disclaimer, remember these are just my opinions on this generation's gaming consoles. If you have a different opinion, then go on and comment or post it. I'd like to see how my thoughts compare to other gamers.

Nice blog man

I just have to disagrea with one thing:the third party suckage for the Wii.Yes, you may be gasping at your screen right now, but hear me out.In the early days of the DS, third parties also only saw mini-games, mini-games and more mini-games for the handheld, because thats all they tought the DS was good for, and look at it now!I believe that some developers are starting to take note of the wii's true potencial, for example, who said the wii couldn't handle good graphics?Just look at "The Conduit" from High Voltage, and which also happens to look like a very good game, and we can also bring up "de Blob" which seems like an awesome platformer, with some not-to-shabby graphics itself, and (as you yourself said) theres Madworld, for those wii owners that find themselfs having a thirst for BLOOD!!!(lol)All in all, I believe that very soon, third party developers are going to pick up the pace, and deliver some good games

p.s.-ah yes, I almost forget the game Zack and Wicky, wich is also a preety decent game, from a third party developer.

The gods don't seem to favor me, but I kinda like it better that way.-Final Fantasy XII

Ah, yes!

Yes, this is true. I guess by looking at the portable form of of the console (e.g. PS3 has the PSP, the Wii has the DS) you can determine the console future much like stocks. But the portables will be in my next post. Anyway thank you for commenting as it will help me better research the publicity incorporated with the consoles.

ahh yes, i luv my f**kin

ahh yes, i luv my f**kin 360, it IS the king of the internet, but yes i sometimes enjoy the wii with my friends, haven't really turned it on for about a month :P but i got the homebrew channel for it its keeping me occupied for another week lol

I didnt get the part were if

I didnt get the part were if you are a hardcore gamer you have a 360... wth?

"the PS3 is a quality system but it just seems a bit lacking in what a gamer looks for in a console."

What a gamers looks for in a console is its small size?

Sory but if anyone chooses a console by its size then he should get a handheld. The PS3 isnt that big, even more conserning wath it packs... Big is the Atari 5200, now thats a freaking beast!!

Oh and the "flawless online" of the 360... meh...

But bessides this, you got your point through well, mainly on the Wii part. Sometimes I think that it would be nice to have a Wii, mainly because of what you said about being a more "party friendly" sistem. I know that it has some sinlge player games that are just great that I would love to try out, but to play with friends must be very cool.

I am tired of playing Pro Evolution Soccer every time that we get together! (you know, most of them are kinda gramers :P, but insted of Madden and Halo, is PES and Counter Strike xDD)

PS:

The PS3 isn't big

I have to disagree with the statement that the PS3 is big. It is only slightly larger than the 360. Plus you have to account for the fact that there is not bulky power supply involved. It's a simple cord running from the back of the unit to the wall. The 360 has a large power supply.

Other than that you had a decent blog. Honestly, you just need to pick what fits you better. Do all of your friends own a 360 and game online? Do you have a HDTV setup that can benefit from bluray movie support on the PS3? Are you more about the party gaming aspect of the WII? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself.

Of course every fanboy is going to tell you what system to get, but it's all about personal choice. Don't fall pray to fanboyism, and make the decision on what is best for you in your situation.

Well, yes...

I'm not exactly advocating anything here. I'm just trying to be investigative. I do in fact own all three and thought it would benefit the SA community to share what I thought. Not everyone with agree with me and I don't expect anyone to. I think that my scenario might be totally different from someone with a smaller television or a slower internet connection.

Sometimes I find that some of my friends will complain about 'lag' issues whilst my 360 will do just perfectly. And to be honest I am not the biggest fan of the PS3 due mostly to the fact that the price was so high that I may have expected for more bang for my buck.

Sure it can play BluRay disks but that isn't what I payed good money for. I have a similar stance on the PlayStation Portable but that is for another post. Anyway to answer your question I did ask myself about certain features and found that I was looking into the potential and advantages/disadvantages of each system. Whilst there is still and open discussion I can only say that each console has it's own unique way for different groups of people to play. For example, if you're the kind of person who might play a game just every once in a while and would prefer to watch a movie instead, then you'd want the PS3. If you're the kind of person who is very social, then you'd probably get the Wii. It really depends more on the gamer than the console itself.

I totally agree with what

I totally agree with what you have to say. It's clear that you gave comprehensive thought to your purchase.

For me, obviously, I own a PS3 for my primary gaming console. The reason I did this is because I've got a 47" 1080p HDTV and a 5.1 premium surround sound set up. For my entertainment dollar, I went with the PS3. In coming to that decision I lumped value in and considered all of my gaming and audio/visual needs. Also, considering most AAA titles now are cross-platform, your going to be safe going either way. It's also nice that it up-converts all of my DVD's to 1080p as well.

I've got a Wii that I haven't touched in 3 months except for last week to do a software update. :(

My roommate has a 360, and although I don't play it often, I'm tempted to pick up a few games for it like Gears and Mass Effect.

Hardcore gamer

What is a "Hardcore gamer"? I think it is a word that is used so much but has little definition. I mean i always used to think someone who simply plays games a lot more than average game players and for long periods of time, also can talk games till blood comes out of the ears is a hardcore gamer, but then some peoples veiws are differnt. i mean with the exception of doom and demo discs i have never played a FPS i just no good at them and they don't appeal to me, but when i said that to some people in a forum once you wanna know what they said . Well you not a real gamer then, and you might think that would upset a child but not a grown 24 year old but it did because of how much i love games. I mean when i was about 10 or so that kinda comment would have never exsisted. i mean yeah people would argue who was the best sega or nintendo but it never mattered because it was all about the games now i feel it's sometimes all about FPS and online gaming. Thats not the case for a lot of people but it is for some. Any way thats just my opinion take as you want.

Yes, what is an hardcore gamer?

The conception its really tricky, bu what I normaly use is: an hardcore gamer is not only someone that plays a lot of games or hours straight, but also knows about what is going on with the Universe of Gaming and also the past generations. Besides that he/she should also be interessed how do games are made or how do certain aspects of them works. It isnt only to play games, anyone can do that! But to study them and like it, now that is the hard part.
I also like to think that a hardcore gamer doesnt play just FPSs or MMOs or just one or two genres even if it is for long periods of time. If someone can play almost any type of game and enjoy it, even if some more then others wich is normal, that I can call Hardcore.

Hardcore gamer is

What the media made up. Seriously they always make new words and this is just to make them watch more. Who uses the word the most? The media. The media always goes on the gamers side and have no balls to say what they actually think. Like movie games are supposed to be bad but some of them aren't But just because it is it sucks. But they almost never say it is good. After they get people to say it they use it less. But they still use it and people are still classifing people as hardcore or casual. Also what is in the middle?

Ah, here's what I think...

My personal definition of a hardcore gamer is someone who is just on the edge to being a pro gamer who plays for cash. A hardcore gamer is someone who'll play for achievement points or some kind of recognition whether the game is quality or not. Someone who doesn't care much for the game itself but the "fame." In short (and opinion), I see a hardcore gamer as someone who takes it a little too seriously.
