8 - Great: 8s are great games that have something holding it back from excellence, or some features aren't as polished. The game is still extremely worthy of playing, but it may not be the most impressive.

After a couple years spent getting an MBA and freelancing, he finally found a home at ScrewAttack.com. As far as games go, Sean likes to play anything he can get his hands on, but especially enjoys third-person action RPGs. Is that really a genre?

I gave this game a 9. However i feel you should probably rent it first to see if you liked it.I played on the PC so there were not that many bugs and the loading time were not to long.

I love this game but I think 8.5 is a bit generous. Still this review is WAY better than ur RE6 review nice job.

Might end up picking this up on a Steam sale once it has been released on PC. I'm not in a hurry since I want to play the three earlier Assassin's Creed games before III. It may not be necessary to play all of them but I almost always do so with sequels and I've played through the first one already anyway.

I really am loving this game. I've heard people being upset over the ending. But I still want to finish it and, like Mass Effect 3, I doubt it'll ruin the game over all for me.

November 9, 2012 - 4:11pm

I still have to wonder if the fervor over this installment's conclusion will eclipse the Mass Effect 3 reaction...

Seeing as how the story feels a bit more engaging and thought out and how there is so much variety I probably will give this game a shot. Hopefully though it will be harder than the past games since those were painfully easy. Luckily it seems that the side missions look to be more enjoyable than in the past games. This looks like the American Revolution game that I wanted for ages. Oh, and good review Sean!

Question though, it is necessary to play Brotherhood and Revelations first or can they be skipped? I've played 1 and 2 but not those two.

Blue Madness

December 8, 2012 - 7:33am

Brotherhood and Revelations both contain a full recap of the previous events at the beginning of the game, so I would expect 3 to have one as well.

I was wondering that too. All I know about AC 2.5 and 2.75 is that Desmond stabbed his "girlfriend".

OddRocker

The problem with the AssAssins Creed games is that they never fixed the gameplay they just simplified it

DarkPenguin

November 9, 2012 - 1:20pm

My opinion is a unpopular one but I find most of the actual gameplay is not very polished. The game as a whole is not very polished. It's often led to very frustrating moments. There are also bugs/glitches that cause me to restart the game. In fact, this may be the buggiest game experience I have, personally, ever had.(That includes Bethesda games) And one important mention is that this game does nothing to actually make you feel like an Assassin. It's more like the feeling of a soldier and a errand boy.

But I do like the game...The story is pretty good. I just wish they had more time to work on it. I do recommend renting it.

Sean, do more of these if able. That was a very engaging review and very well spoken, thank you!

InterestingCathal

November 9, 2012 - 11:45am

I wouldn't really say it's that approachable since you do spend more time as Desmond in this entry than any previous one but I'd still highly recommend buying it. It's certainly the series redemption to those disappointed with Revelations.

TheSwedishGamer

November 9, 2012 - 9:58am

I'll probably pick this up even though I've never cared for this series until now. I'm glad this installment will be accesible to newcomers like me.

Hey in terms of playing a native american as the protag in the main story, did it feel fairly straightforward, glorifying the NA's or stereotypical at all? I am actually kind of intrigued by the notion of a game having that as an issue (is the sole reason I won't play red dead redemption) so I may grab this on steam when it hits if it seems like it's taking a objective or at least fair view of things.

Sean Hinz

November 9, 2012 - 11:19am

My familiarity with Native American culture is honestly limited to high school social studies.

That being said; they do speak in their native language, music in the missions surrounding the village sound like recordings of actual tribal rituals, and the issue of Connor's tribe being forced off their land is ever present.

It feels authentic, even if it plays to generalizations.

Evilkinggumby

November 9, 2012 - 11:55am

Thanks man. Good to know. I will do some more looking, but I think I may grab this either way just to see what efforts they did and did not do.

Does "more aproachable" mean even easier? Also, this really was a very good review.

Blue Madness

November 9, 2012 - 7:43am

The way he said it, I think he meant you won't feel lost in the story if you start the series with this game.

Sean Hinz

November 9, 2012 - 9:27am

Blue Madness is right. And I also think it is easier in the sense that the number of steps behind completing a task are reduced.

Notoriety is a great example. In Revelations the process of eliminating notoriety completely required 3 or 4 steps. Now you really only have to do one thing and you're back incognito.

Kael Hyun

November 9, 2012 - 10:53am

Really? Because when ever I'm in the Fronteir it sets my Notoriety to 1 and I cant get to Incognito. Also it's always been 3 steps to reset it (Posters took down 1/4 Town Cryers 1/2 are normal but the Third which was Killing someone who was saying you did it is replaced by going to a Printing Press shop Takes off the whole thing (or 3/4, can't remember exactly and I could never find those bastards.)

Sean Hinz

November 9, 2012 - 11:25am

That was just my experience. But Notoriety is in 3 tiers now. Posters eliminate one, Criers two, and Printing Press removes ALL.

With the Frontier it is always one because that area is heavily contested (due to the Revolution) and I think that's what makes the British Patrols matter.

Robotto

November 9, 2012 - 5:44am

Does this wrap up the story or will there be more? Otherwise I don't see why I should bother buying the anthology box

Crichton

November 9, 2012 - 6:04am

Both. Its hard to explain without spoliing it. But the goal since the end of Assassins Creed 2 is achieved. Another problem is created, but its defninatly enough to be able to say 'Iv finished this'

Robotto

November 9, 2012 - 6:21am

Thanks. I knew the series would be still around after 3, but I'm glad it ends this trilogy (of five)

Wow, that was one hell of a review Sean. I hope you do more view like this one. I really miss the video reviews SA did. But this one is VERY well done and something to be proud of.

Great review Sean. Got me more excited to get my hands on the game.

Fezzdogg

November 9, 2012 - 12:08am

It is a great game but... its buggy as hell I thought Ubisoft had been working on this for ages. The story is awful, people got upset about the Mass Effect 3 ending well thats nothing compared to the dog turd of an ending in AC3. Also the story just magically jumps all over the shop without any explanation. Don't get me wrong I love AC3 but it doesn't even come close to AC2. Hmmm... maybe if Ubisoft didnt fuck around with 2 non sequel games maybe AC3 would be amazing. I know I'm being negative but if your an AC fan it'll tickle your fancy.

WeaponHunter X

November 9, 2012 - 12:08am

A few things that weren't mentioned that I'd like to chime in on, the whole of movement has been highly polished and movement feels a great deal smoother than previous games. Assassinations with the hidden blade has been tweaked as well to allow for movement directly after the initial strike, no longer a need to wait a second watching Conner stab his target before he can distance himself from the soon to be attention drawing body. While you're only limited to six recruits this time around they each don't feel like they were just plonked into the world, each recruit has a special skill that adds to the things that they all can perform taking the place of the courtesans/romanis, thieves and mercenaries. Fast travel actually has to be worked for this time around, you work your way through an underground system of tunnels carrying a lantern the entire time solving puzzles to find and unlock openings all over the cities. One gripe I do have is that sometimes talks with npcs that you're following or escorting can be cut short the instant you cross a threshold into the next part of the mission, a little gripe to be sure but it still nags enough. All in all this is the best entry in the series to date and I honestly can't wait till Assassin's Creed 4

November 8, 2012 - 9:41pm

Pre-ordered on Steam today. Can't wait! So can anyone tell me if the horses play a decent role in the game? That was one of my favorite parts of Brotherhood, and their removal was my second biggest problem with Revelations, right next to the overpowered enemies.

Nitroklop

November 8, 2012 - 10:22pm

Yo this game is raddo and I like it.

Nitroklop

November 8, 2012 - 10:10pm

Horses are in the game yes, and you'll find yourself using them a lot.

So yes, horses play a decent role in the game.
