Just finished it. I thought Arkham Asylum was good, but this one definitely hit the 9/10 range. Overall, it did everything Asylum did but made it more varied and fun to play.

Well if I wasn't already sold by playing the original and waiting for the sequel, this review more or less, sealed the deal. I still kinda wish they SA crew would just go back solely to the "Buy, Rent, or Fuck it" rating system, just because that set them apart from the rest and pretty much simplifies what one should think coming into a new game, but oh well.

I just wish they would do a similar game for Iron Man or Ghostrider.

Great! They didn't change the game!!! I love the screwattack guys put the name of the developer. Great touch guys!

It seems to me that the problems people are having stem from their perception of what the numerical score means. For years, review outlets have trained gamers to look at games on what was actually a 7-10 scale. Sites like Screwattack have begun to lead a push away from that, taking the 1-10 scale seriously. Naturally, games receiving the same praise will land a lower numerical score.

Jow was that controversial? You praised the shit out of the game.

clarkC12

October 27, 2011 - 2:48am

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this. Expressing opinions on matters is actually an individual's right that has also its limitations and we should be aware of that. What's controversial with Batman is the way some people react to his being famous and icon of being a super hero considering the fact that many individuals are now doing some horrifying things in relation to Batman. Just like wearing Batman costumes even in an ordinary date and place and even in doing some crazy thing. A male in Michigan was sentenced to six month probation for his tricks in a Superhero costume. Mark Wayne Williams was arrested in May in Petoskey, Mich. Officers, responding to reports of Batman being spotted on a roof, found him dangling off the side of the building by a rope. Some reports say police the officers helped him up, some say he was “rescued.” It is not clear whether the would-be superhero was stuck. The man was detained for trespassing and having a concealed weapon. He has already been instructed to hang up his cape for six months. I don't think this would-be Batman unmasked in court and sentenced to probation had a great idea of what heroism should be.

Sidescrollers said controversial....I see no controversy here. That was Jared's opinion and its fine. Me personally gives this game a 9.5 or higher but maybe I felt more freedom than Jared did as I was going through the whole giant city.

why are people so upset with this review. Why are all the little girls just whining and complaining here he gave his honest opinion, and just because it differs from your doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's a fair rating and the people who complained about it saying that it should be 10 go find something better to do than bitch about a game review.

Unholy_one

October 25, 2011 - 9:57pm

absolutely nothing. :D. Many people just disagree with Jared's view on the game. I am one of them but people shouldn't be making a big fuss over it. It's Jared's opinion and people should respect it. Disagreeing with Jared's views is one thing but complaining because Jared gave the score .5 less than what another person would give is ridiculous.

I for one didn't have any problems with the fact that this is an open world game because I feel that the non linear style that was used for Arkham Asylum just wasn't a good style for it even though you did have to backtrack when you got upgrades for your weapons.

And I'm more of a fan of open world games because it just adds more exploration and lets you travel more than being trapped in an enclosed world where you don't have the option to explore! (I'm looking at you Final Fantasy 13 and MGS4)

And some of the side missions do play a part in the actual story of the game which to me is a good thing! They aren't like the side missions in the Assassin's Creed games where they are just there and don't add any real purpose in moving the main story along.

And you also have this sense of urgency which is the world that Batman lives in and it absolutely shows when you are playing this game! The sense of urgency just adds to the excitement in my opinion!

I'm sticking by my rating of a 9 or a 9.5!

I actually didn't find the game overly familiar at all. Being able to seamlessly incorperate all your gadgets into combat made it feel fresh and fun, and the riddler challenges are a lot more tough and memorable than in Arkham Asylum. I never enjoy hunting for collectibles other than in the Arkham games. I was a little saddened by how few predator levels there are, and the ending pissed me off a little, but other than that its about as perfect a game as I've ever played.

babyhenchy1

October 24, 2011 - 8:54pm

Arkham City is far and away the best game I've played all year. Deus Ex, Portal 2, and Dark Souls were excellent but Arkham City perfectly captures how fun it is to be the bat.

It's one of the most flawless action/adventure games I can remember. Then again no game is flawless and I do agree with you on many of the flaws. Though I personally enjoyed this story a little bit more than Arkham Asylum due to its sense of urgency. And while the gameplay didn't change much, it added quite a bit.

StealthMaster86

October 24, 2011 - 7:36pm

Can't see why people are bent out of shape of this review. It's pretty much spot on. To me the most disappointing thing about it is that the predator gameplay takes a backseat.

Board_games_r_evil

8.5 is probably the most down to earth review of this game, i can understand why an editor would be blown away by this game since his job is to play games he probably won't even like but as a consumer we have to be sure that this game measure with the rest of our gaming library and an 8.5 is definitely worthy of a purchase. And did people complain as much when Arkham Asylum got a rent it?

GMo

October 24, 2011 - 6:12pm

The game is flawless. I have no problems with it. I was so addicted to the story that I took off from work so I could play the F out of it!!! Cannot wait to replay it all over again!

KingSigy

October 24, 2011 - 5:47pm

I don't see what's so controversial about this review. Jared enjoyed the game a lot and felt it wasn't entirely new. That's exactly the same way I think.

Nemo SomeGuy

October 24, 2011 - 4:27pm

To me, making Batman into open world style is a mistake. Without having to play the first game you would get lost, not knowing what you are supposed to do or you just don't have the right tool.

Also, gameplay-wise, there isn't much difference from this to the prequel. It is by far not a bad game, just not as good as the hype. The first game's success heavily contributed to the success of the movie The Dark Knight. Outside of the movie's success the game is just a more refined Assassin's Creed.

So I absolutely agree with Jared. Pretty good game, just not as good as the hype due to the feeling of been-there-done-that.

Bugface

October 24, 2011 - 5:04pm

Id it just me, or are the overwhelming amount of side missions in games getting out of hand? Thats what I think my problem is. Like Jared said, the main story is urgent, and it should stay that way.

GMo

October 24, 2011 - 6:18pm

sometimes I don't have the time to devote to 'the next dungeon' so to speak. I like having the option to just explore. ESPECIALLY since it helps you level up. Then in this game everything is urgent, There's the telephone murderer that has hostages, Riddler has Hostages, and there's a guy cutting peoples faces off... IMO that's all another aspect of being Batman. There's an overwhelming amount of urgent crimes to solve and you have to be level headed and decide what takes precedence.

Nemo SomeGuy

October 24, 2011 - 5:31pm

I feel the same. That's my biggest problem with open world game. Once the game opens up main mission goes out of window and sidetracking and backtracking starts.

In Arkham Asylum, the more linear progression makes you feel the progression and more like an adventure. Arkham City feel like Batman is on a vacation and taking down big named villains on his leisure time.

clank

October 24, 2011 - 6:09pm

you have a choice to either follow the main story, or complete the side-quests. It's not like the game is forcing you to do the side-quests immediately as they become available or they'll disappear

Nemo SomeGuy

October 25, 2011 - 12:10pm

The game doesn't force you, however when a green question mark show up right beside you and you know there is a really good chance you won't be able to find it from the rest of the buildings that looks very much alike, I believe almost all people will choose to go for side-quests first.

Then if you are lucky/unlucky there will be another thing to do right beside that, so on and on...

clank

October 25, 2011 - 12:58pm

There is quite a detailed map with all the sidequests and tagged riddler trophies listed, and you can also set a custom waypoint, so its not that hard to not get lost

Bugface

October 24, 2011 - 5:37pm

Yeah, I mean, in Infamous, its a little excessive. Thats really the only comparison of a sandbox game I can think of. Both are great games, but as a gamer, I feel like I have to see EVERYTHING! And I want to, but it gets tedious a lot. And if I skip it, I feel like I'm missing out. I guess its just one of my few flaws...

At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite... I love the way it works in Elder Scrolls though. Big world with a main story, but I guess the difference is that the core mechanics aren't based off of the main plot. See what I'm saying?

Nemo SomeGuy

October 25, 2011 - 12:12pm

Not really flaw, me too. I paid for the game I got to see everything.

So in Fallout 3, it took me 60 hours of side-quests before I found out where Rivet City was, your second stop in the main story.

Board_games_r_evil

October 24, 2011 - 6:25pm

the side missions in Batman Arkham city actually play a huge roll in progression which is actually a flaw, when i was playing batman i was so engrossed with the main plot that I wanted to play it without breaking the flow then when i played the side mission i felt that i was supposed to do them while i was playing the main story. The main story had a strong sense of urgency but so did the side mission, there wasnt really a lot of side quests but it just felt that the side quests were actually bits of the main story that got removed because it wasnt joker related (spoiler?), there was too much sense of urgency that it's hard to prioritize what you need to focus on, but in the end i still love the fuck out of this game, this is entertainment done right, almost perfect if it wasnt for a few nuisances, but i guess i was more prone to be blown away since i... didnt play the Arkham Asylum (plz dont kill me)

Bugface

October 24, 2011 - 6:39pm

You bring up lots of good points. I don't hate side missions, not at all. But what I dont like is trying to do all of them. And I also haven' played Asylum, but I want to SOOOSSOOSOSO much!

Hayamo

October 24, 2011 - 4:17pm

Wait... why is this controversial? Is it because he didn't give it a perfect 10/10? He told us to buy it! Isn't that enough?

Engoni

October 24, 2011 - 5:24pm

I agree, and a score of 8.5 is a realy great score. All good games dont have to get a perfect 10/10 to be good.
